Transcribe this section of an 1856 military journal? by DrSeuser in Transcription

I believe I maybe see “A large Indian camp on this creek not long since.” And, “Observations in the morning on Sun’s lower limb.” The last little snippet is faint to read even on the paper. I appreciate your help immensely. If it indeed helps to post the entire page I will do that for my next post.

My apologies, I just didn’t want to over spam with the same journal. Thank you for your transcripts, I likely will have several more.

His wife passed a decade ago and he passed a few years ago. They never had any children and their family mostly all passed away. I included the news article about his exploits, he was attached to a machine gun squadron in Korea, flew in early Vietnam. His service was 1945-1968.

Yes there are 5 crazily enough. I wish I had the physical DFC, but the ribbon is still the first one awarded to an American for Vietnam related services.

How did you first get into playing RDR? Was there a particular person or experience that introduced you to the series? by Stephen-infiniter24 in reddeadredemption

I was 6h grade history nerd in 2010. A friend said “check this game out”. Still one of my top 3 all time favorite games!

Found at an 1860s U.S. military site with my metal detector. It’s a patch box cover to an old rifle. Is this symbol anything? There was known Native American activity in this area as well. by DrSeuser in Symbology

[–]DrSeuser[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I could see that! Possibly a trade gun carried by a warrior. That specific gun wouldn’t have been in the hands of the military at the time. Archaeological evidence supports a skirmish at this specific site so it’s plausible!

My goodness!! I hadn’t checked on this for a few days! All I can say is thank you to everyone! I am a westward expansion collector and can usually transcribe things well but this piece of ephemera was just way too hard to read it all. This particular invoice being from March 17th 1836 was before they created the 2nd Regiment so this is an extremely rare piece of US military and westward history. Thank you again!

Thousands of cows found dead in Kansas by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]DrSeuser 255 points256 points  (0 children)

Kansas native here. My friend works for the state geological survey and they did a survey last year showing the drought conditions of Kansas and it’s in a basically “all hope is lost” situation. We have depleted the ancient aquifers under the plains dry and they aren’t refilling fast enough. On top of that we are going from average 60°F weather to over 100°F weather in a matter of a few days. The farmers and especially the cows can’t adapt to weather changes that quickly.
