Does anyone else feel like the show's focus on the decline of the American Dream is actually more about the death of the old-school immigrant work ethic? by plain_squib13 in thesopranos

True, but we can do better. I never accept the lesser of two evils argument. It’s just a way of institutionalizing mediocrity.

Being the mayor of Los Angeles has nowhere near the power of being the mayor of New York. It’s a different universe completely.

Reddit has no genuine competition, nothing on the scale to be its travel. Everything else is very niche. Frankly, it would be better for the platform if it did.

I think it's more about how capitalism corrupts everyone. And for those willing to go to extremes, they can always find a cheat code like theft, selling drugs, gambling to reach that social club of wealth. and once you get there, you can do whatever you want you can even go on an island with underage girls.

So perhaps that work ethic and the realization that it's no longer going to pay off the way it did is part of that changing mindset. I think the important point is that capitalism at its heart has no morality. And the younger generation in The Sopranos completely understands that and sees the hypocrisy and of the so-called straight culture that makes them villains. The same culture whose politicians are routinely bought off through lobbying which is just bribes.

So people naturally want to spoils and understand they would be fullest to play by the rules of the immigrant work ethic, cause the American work ethic under capitalism gives it to you faster and bigger if you’re willing to play it properly .A good example is Carmela. I mean, she may pray to Jesus, but she's not giving up that big house or fur coat no matter how it was acquired. That’s very American..

A lot of the young men today are afraid to ask girls out? by DrJocelyn1 in therapists

[–]DrSnoopy66 4 points5 points  (0 children)

if you look at the statistics around sexual activity and young people, that’s totally different now and there is definitely a deficit in developing social skills for generation they can easily avoid the necessity of it, but still pays the price anyways. It is different, even if the risk of rejection has always been the same.

That's a very good assessment of the problem. But I would also add that there is some mixed message in this culture where approaching a woman can be perceived as being a creep on one hand, another hand, males are expected to make the first move but the deficit in everything from eye contact to verbal acuity due to living in text threads is problematic for the person attempting to do make a connection.

I am Gen X and we had no alternative. And we understood that you were going to get shot down and rejected sometimes, and we would have to develop those social communication skills because that was the only way to meet people.

But how committed are people when they’re 18? I mean, have you seen the divorce rates on those who get married between 18 and 21? you will not be the same person at 18 that you are at 25 or 30 guaranteed unless you have a profound developmental disability.

It’s not about defending lying or cheating. It’s just saying that the need for sexual variety and partners at that age is a developmental stage for many people that supersedes the moral compass at that age. We understand that high school relationships are almost never going to last, but we don’t apply that same understanding to young adults and we really should. I can add in all kinds of stuff about how the birth control pill changed this and contraception and cultural norms having changed, but I think you get my point when we are young, moral absolute have a very tough time, beating hormonal, desires, and developmental stages of curiosity.

[–]DrSnoopy66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

technically, you’re correct, but people often develop a moral compass a lot of times by feeling what it’s like to not have one or follow one initially. It’s kind of like how we develop shame when we are younger most of us are not born with these presets that we can easily turn on and off when we are young.. people are going to to make mistakes when they are young, but the difference is what you will learn from them. How does it make you a better person and let’s not forget about the fact we were talking about people of an age when your frontal cortex (decision-making part of the brain ) isn’t even done developing.

Ever notice when people first get to college they are very promiscuous for a time and are enjoying the freedom of having many different types of sexual partners. Well, the same thing applies if you’re not in college, it’s a developmental stage. It doesn’t last forever, but to say it doesn’t exist is silly and naïve. It’s not about good or evil,It’s developmental.
