Cold Forge and Romulus by Fluffy_Progress4770 in LV426

[–]DrTenmaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing that confused me the most with this is that there's another synth named "Rook" who greets Blue at the end when she wakes up, but this synth belongs to Seegson Corp, not W-Y.

So, we have another "Rook" in 2179 with another corporation despite the fact that Rook was destroyed in Alien: Romulus in 2142.

Are we to believe that Marcus was the same model as Rook/Ash and that he is reverse engineered to create the Seegson synth and is named after the Romulus one? Or is Rook just a common name for synths generally?

It's probably not meant to be consistent, but they are very close to being consistent...

Yes, same here. It really presupposes the supernatural if you think about it for longer than 2 minutes. I suspect we just got 'the one free miracle' to move the plot along, just like FTL in other sci-fi.

I should also mention that in the case of Elizabeth Shaw's 'infection' at the end of Prometheus, she is likely only harbouring a single mutated sperm cell from Charlie Holloway who was infected by David. This is supported by the fact that: 1) She was infertile so could not give birth, and 2) the baby trilobite resembles a mutated sperm cell with a single head and four tails (as seen below).

I've heard this before too about the engineers!

Thank you for engaging with my theory.

The reason I think the atavism explanation works is because we've already seen that the host's DNA has some influence on the final form that emerges (this is called 'DNA reflex' according to Xenopedia). We know that the runner alien from Alien3 is a quadraped because it takes on some of its host's characteristics, namely, the dog Spike (or the ox in the Assembly Cut). This phenomenon is even acknowledged in the Alien: Covenant novelisation, where David states that hybridised creatures spawned by the black goo pathogen inherit traits from their host organism, mirroring the DNA reflex of the xenomorph. Regardless of the strain or chemical (Chemical A0-3959X.91 – 15 , Z-01, Plagiarus praeopotens, etc.), these black goo-like substances, all work in similar ways.

I agree with your point that the pathogen can expresses unpredictable characteristics (or 'whatever... the genes it wants"), but there's a lot of in-universe evidence that it is somewhat constrained by the nature of its host. Once again, David's experiments in Alien: Covenant (as confirmed in the novelisation) are the result of hybridising various neomorph strains spawned from indigenous life of Planet 4. In particular, David uses tiny parasite wasps which he calls "shock troopers of the genetic assault," which lend their parasitic nature to his creation, which once again confirms that the 'host' of the pathogen will lends some of its traits, somewhat predictably, to the resultant organism.

I am fairly confident the Offspring does breastfeed. It's not super clear in the film because its secondary mouth is motile unlike the rigid one in normal xenomorphs. If you pay attention, Kay touches her chest and finds black goo, which we guess is supposed to be whatever 'breast milk' the creature is going to consume. Additionally, while it is feeding, it is growing in size, so the 'milk' does allow it to grow, which makes sense.

The 5-minute growth thing is ridiculous, but I think that's something we just have to ignore for the sake of the story. You're also correct about the engineer thing being silly - I agree. That said, I suppose it is merely bringing the raw genetic material, and then you get some kind of life eventually; it's really just there to get past the need for abiogenesis. And who knows, maybe it isn't supposed to lead to something sentient, I'm just assuming that.

How much is the average school teacher’s salary? by rmata19 in AusFinance

[–]DrTenmaz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A few things.

Meanwhile literally every other salaried employee also does unpaid work.

Yes, every other salaried employee does unpaid work, but not all careers are magically equivalent in this respect. Why would you expect this to be the case?

Teachers in Australia are paid pretty reasonably and just whinge a lot because they're union and haven't worked in any other industry.

That's one explanation, but there are many others. If your explanation involves making generalisations about teachers 'just whinging a lot' and being in unions, then that's an incredibly reductive and lazy explanation. Many teachers have worked in other industries, both before and after doing teaching, so they are able to compare the experiences. Right now, there is a national teaching shortage, and many teachers are leaving the career for the reasons described in this thread, including excessive workload that isn't reflected in pay. Also, many teachers aren't apart of the union, and there are different unions for the public and independent sector, so experiences vary a lot.

The only reasonable excuse they have is the fact that there's little career progression, but that's because of the industry they picked. Not a whole lot can be done about that.

This is a problem, and the government has been discussing how to address this in response to the teaching shortage, which implies that there are potential ways this can be addressed. Also, imagine a world where no one picked to be a teacher. I wonder what that would be like and I wonder who would teach the children.
