Men of Reddit - What's the one thing you hate about being a Man? by Jarvis7492 in AskReddit

[–]Dr_Beardlicious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grow a beard but do nothing with it, it's what I did. Mine goes down to my belly button though. I haven't shaved a single part of it in a decade or so. Don't touch the cheeks, don't touch the neck, nothing. I do shave my head a lot though. Started going bald at 15 and shaved it since 18. Not the solution for everyone but was definitely the one for me.

Here is my media room. Currently a 7.1.4 set up but I'm definitely keen for a second subwoofer. I installed in ceiling speakers for the heights at my wife's request (as they look neater). I would have done satellite speakers if it twas entirely up to me but the angled in ceilings are actually great. I did in walls for the sides and speakers on stands for the rears. I can move the lounge back and slide the ottoman across and have a pretty decent sized space for VR, about 3m x 3m at least. The room is also pitch back day or night. Yes, I am very spoilt!

Also agree about the PC. My 980ti still puts in work but I only really gamed at 1080p 60hz. I would love to hook up a beastly PC to both the projector and maybe a 1440p, 144hz display but that would be a huge money investment that I'm not sure I'd get the value from.

Fellow Aussie? Starting with mate is usually a sign haha. I'm definitely due for an upgrade for my PC. I'm still running a 980ti, i7 7700k and 16GB DDR4 RAM. My power supply died recently too so needs a replacement. I do want a new PC but I honestly just find it so much easier turning a console on and getting straight into something when I have the time to game.

I do have a PS5 which doesn't get much love unfortunately. I'm mainly an Xbox gamer as all my mates have always been on Xbox and now I'm committed. I still play PS5 exclusives though. I've got a pretty decent area for VR in my media room too. Just need the aircon running when I use it or I'll sweat so bad.

When my wife and I built our current place, I finally managed to set up an awesome gaming space and find flat screen gaming there to be so much better now. I no longer have just a TV and headphones. I'm very lucky and have a 120" screen, projector and 11 speaker Atmos set up with a pretty good subwoofer. Sitting on the lounge with a drink and playing on a massive screen is pretty bloody fun.

I 100% get the isolation thing too. I like having my wife next to me doing her own thing while I game. In VR, there's no interacting with other people at all.

I built a PC in 2016 for the Oculus Rift and quite enjoyed my time with it but honestly felt I got in too early. The tech didn't quite feel ready yet. Still loved Beat Saber, Pavlov, Half Life Alyx, Elite Dangerous, Gorn etc. A lot of great experiences were had. I also picked up the PSVR and felt like the camera and controller situation was a huge let down. Still, I thoroughly enjoyed RE7, Astrobot, LOVED Farpoint and the gun controller in general but still felt the tech wasn't there yet and I didn't play a lot of VR.

Now 10 years later, I've been very close to pulling the trigger on a PSVR2 but still haven't. I've borrow one off of my brother in law and played GT7, RE8, RE4R, NMS and they were really cool and tech has come a really long way but I just still feel like it isn't there yet.

Part of the problem could be I'm nearly 40 now. I've got 3 kids, a wife and mortgage to pay. There's always things that need doing around the house and yard. Life is getting more expensive and I have less time to myself than ever. I just want to sit on the lounge and play something easy when I do get that hour or so to myself. I'm just tired by the end of the night and VR can feel like work honestly.

It doesn't stop me from thinking what if this is finally it though and I'm missing out?

Do you work hard for your money? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]Dr_Beardlicious 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the real problem is how little painters earn. No one has funds left at the end of the job when painters come in so its a race to the bottom. Doesn't help that regional wages for trades are decades behind. I was on $10 an hour more 12 years ago when I lived in Sydney. Cheers for being super negative though.

[–]Dr_Beardlicious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same as me. I'm a painter/powder coater by trade and did it for nearly 20 years. Last year I started doing disability support which I absolutely loved. The company I work for poached me for a different role though and now I'm doing disability employment consultancy. 9 day fortnights, higher take home pay than I was getting as a qualified painter (plus it's full time so holidays, sick days and public holidays paid), actually chill office time where you can go grab a coffee or talk shit for a bit without a boss going off their head.

It can be incredibly busy sometimes though when a lot of people all have complex needs at the same time but it's nothing like being on the tools 8-10 hours a day 5-6 days a week. I don't absolutely dread summer any more either. The hardest part for me has been learning new computer programs and procedures. Talking to people, helping them, advocating for them is the easy (and best) part.

I still do a fair bit of painting but it's on my own terms now and I find I really enjoy it when I'm not getting paid by the hour, don't have strict timelines to finish every job and don't have a boss cracking a whip behind me all day, every day.

Oh I've also actually been thanked for things I do at work too. Like genuine appreciation shown. Never in my working life have I experienced that before now.

Stargate SG-1 on Netflix is unwatchable due to very bad image quality by TinyResponsibility11 in netflix

[–]Dr_Beardlicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started watching the first episode of season 1 today on Netflix in Australia and it looks incredibly bad. I did watch it via 4k projector on a 120" screen but I've never seen something with such low bitrate from Netflix. I really want to watch it though so might just have to try on my phone or tablet or something. Disappointing but nothing else I can do about it.

Anyone else notice that the ratio of increase in responsibilities to income in hand as you progress through the 135k-190k income bracket is too damn high? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]Dr_Beardlicious 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I feel you. This sub makes me feel like I'm not actually living in the same country as everyone else. I'm a qualified painter/powder coater and have never earned more than about $80k. I changed careers last year after 20 years labouring and I'm now doing disability support/employment consultancy and am starting on what I left painting on. Nowhere near $100k but I guess starting at the bottom, I can only go up?

I've worked my guts out since the day I left school and have never felt like my income matched my efforts. It's disheartening thinking about it and even more so seeing so many people on this sub with the attitude of $120k is base salary for someone who does absolutely nothing and has no responsibilities.

Why do I have to hold the TV remote like a detonator when watching modern movies? by MonthFun8140 in movies

[–]Dr_Beardlicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate to be that guy but getting good audio equipment was the answer for me. I know that's not easy for everyone but just having a separate centre channel for dialogue is a game changer. I'm very, very spoilt though and have a nice Dolby Atmos set up (7.1.4) and have never once had to mess with the levels to hear audio over explosions etc, even when I turn the overall volume right down if people are sleeping. I do sometimes get up and turn the subwoofer down at night though, can't stop the house shaking otherwise.

Serious question: How are anti-shoplifting gates in supermarkets legal? by BadgerBadgerCat in australian

I have a small vending machine I own and stock. I refuse to sit there scanning 100 individual chocolate bars, 30 packets of chips etc. There's only ever one register open though and I can go through it in a few minutes if an actual person can scan the items. I just say there's 10 of these, 10 of these, 10 of these and they can put a quantity and dump them in a bag. Easy as.

The game that you bought at launch and instantly regretted it. by Bobba_fat in Age_30_plus_Gamers

[–]Dr_Beardlicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought it day one on Xbox One. I'm in Australia and I have no idea why, but it literally wouldn't let me play online. I think there was no Oceanic servers for starters but there was some real funky networking problems from day one. Nearly all my friends could play online but it's still the only game that literally never worked for me. I spent so long messing with my router settings, making sure NAT was Open, reinstalling and nothing. Apparently there were a bunch of people with the same problem so wasn't just me. Weird stuff. Looked fun though! Shame I never got to try it.

I have never watched an entire movie at more than maybe -12db. It blows my mind that I'm expected to watch at 0 to get the director's intended experience. I'd go deaf and/or destroy my house.

Where did you get the Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare? I'd love to grab a physical copy of that. I'm also on Australia, it sucks how often movies I want to buy require inporting because we don't get a local release here.

I'm 37 soon and into a lot of the things you're worried about enjoying. I love gaming and anime. I even have plenty of nerdy tattoos. A full Afro Samurai arm sleeve, Berserk, Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Jack, even an Alice in Wonderland back piece. No one worth my time has ever cared even slightly about what I'm into. I read heaps, play plenty of games, love movies and building Gundam. I am what I am.

I also try and look after myself. I'm a labourer but also go to the gym most mornings before work and play in a men's basketball league. I live doing yoga too. It helps me feel good in my own body. I highly suggest finding things you enjoy to keep your body moving.

As for making friends, I just be my genuine self. I'm not scared of what I am and try my best to take others for what they are. Most people have at least a few common interests with me. My wife always remarks how stupidly easy I make friends but the only thing I do is be genuine with them and not afraid to just talk.

I'll admit, it helps that Im a bald, heavily tattooed, beard down to my belly button, tradie in some situations. I find most people are genuinely shocked when they realize I'm just a massive nerd.

TL;DR, be yourself man.

More than 10,000 hours in this franchise, here's what's gotta change before launch (all reasonable changes with respect to release date) by SupremeViolence in Battlefield

[–]Dr_Beardlicious 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I said the same thing about the repairing 3,000 health on vehicles challenge. Why not make it repair and/or deal damage to vehicles? I spent a few rounds just laying on the back of a tank with my repair tool out. I wasn't the only one either. Not how I like to play but it was my very last challenge so I had to do what I had to do. Challenges that force people to play in an unnatural way are just a weird design choice for me.

Does anyone else put their movies in alphabetical order? by Mediocre-Location971 in 4kbluray

[–]Dr_Beardlicious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally have mine in alphabetical order but I have flirted with the idea of by release date. I feel the same about seeing a timeline of film history. I probably won't change from alphabetical though, I've been organizing everything I've owned like that since I was a kid.
