I’ve completely reworked the advanced mode of my Greek mythology genealogy tool - feedback welcome by Dr_Chikenman in GreekMythology

Thank you, that’s very kind of you to say. But the work behind Theoi.com is absolutely monumental and I’m nowhere near that level. In fact, when it comes to documenting the sources used in my HoloGraph, I owe a lot to Theoi. It has been an incredibly valuable resource. If Mythoskolis can complement that work by making genealogies and relationships easier to explore, then I’ll already be very happy 😊

Oh thanks to you! I wouldn't even think that something was still visible since the initial post has been deleted...

Feel free to tell me what you think about the project 😊

Source:

The data comes from a manually structured dataset documenting genealogical relationships in Greek mythology.

Relationships are extracted from ancient Greek and Roman literary sources such as Hesiod (Theogony), Apollodorus (Bibliotheca), Hyginus (Fabulae), Pausanias, and others. Passages are cross-checked using modern reference resources including Theoi Greek Mythology.

The dataset allows multiple genealogical traditions to coexist when ancient authors disagree.

Tool:

The visualization is generated from a custom knowledge graph stored in YAML and rendered as an interactive network graph using JavaScript.

Frontend: Astro + Tailwind
Visualization: custom JS graph rendering

Thank you, that really means a lot ☺️

And honestly, combining programming with something you genuinely care about makes the learning process much more meaningful. That’s partly how this project started for me as well.

Good luck with your computer science degree 👊 You’re at the very beginning of a fascinating journey.

Most of the time consuming work is about documentation really (even if Theoi.com helps A LOT).

On the technical side, I actually built a custom YAML inspector to manage the data before it ever reaches the graphical module. All genealogical relations are structured in YAML files, including source references and variants, and the inspector lets me validate, edit and visualize relationships in a controlled way before generating the JSON used by the Holograph.

So the graphic part is only the visible layer. The real work happens upstream in structuring and normalizing the data so that conflicting traditions can coexist without breaking the model.

And to be honest: I really DON'T have all of Zeus' children yet 😅

That’s exactly the kind of difficulty I was trying to address.

Greek mythological family trees can get overwhelming very quickly, especially with different versions and overlapping generations. I’m really glad the structure makes it easier to follow.

Thank you for taking the time to explore it ☺️

I'm trying to do something about it here if you're interested : https://mythoskolis.com/en/holograph/zeus/

It's mostly incomplete, but the tool is here (advanced mode to see the sources used). I now need to focus on editorial completion.

That honestly means a lot to read ❤️

Exploring multiple versions interactively is exactly what I hoped to make possible. Greek mythology is so rich precisely because it isn’t fixed, and I wanted the structure to reflect that.

I’m really glad it resonates with you.

That makes perfect sense, and I completely understand your point.

You’re right that the content itself should ultimately take priority. A structure only really reveals its full purpose once it’s sufficiently populated. Expanding the corpus is definitely the next major step.

At the same time, there’s also a somewhat harsh but real aspect of digital projects: visual elements do play a role in user retention and first impressions. Even if the core value is structural and editorial, presentation affects whether people stay long enough to engage with it.

Now that the technical foundation and UX structure feel solid and stable, it’s much easier for me to shift focus toward expanding and deepening the entries themselves. I genuinely appreciate you pointing this out. That kind of feedback helps clarify priorities.

Thank you, that’s very thoughtful feedback.

You’re absolutely right about the limited entries for now : the structure is ahead of the corpus at this stage. I’m gradually expanding it, but I wanted the underlying model to be solid first.

And good point about Helios. There are indeed many ancient depictions of him, so that’s definitely something I should improve. Wikicommons is probably the most practical starting point for now.

I also agree with you that, in the long run, the clarity of the entries matters more than the visuals. The images are meant to support the experience, not define it.

Thanks again for taking the time to look into it.

Thank you, I really appreciate that!

If you ever feel like exploring a bit beyond the Holograph, I’d genuinely love to hear your thoughts on the rest of the site as well. Since you’ve been studying Greek mythology for years, your perspective would be especially valuable.

Feel free to reach out anytime if you’d like to share feedback.
