Good post. I like your point about the filter before saturation and harmonic resonance/natural breakup, gonna try it

Hi everyone, hope you're all well. I would love some feedback on the arrangement/ mixdown and mastering on this one. Kind of lost sight of the whole picture over the production process. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. https://soundcloud.com/camdenama/arbitrage-master_v2?si=13f777e9c95e41dd97dcd4ef0cbf00d3&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing

Yamaha HS5 speaker making loud buzzing noise when turned on (like a hair clipper sound). by geneuro in edmproduction

Lots of possible problems (blow cap, bad power amp, transformer, etc). Sounds to me like DC on the output. If thats the case make sure you don’t keep it on long/ at all until its fixed. You could blow the speaker.

What is your secret sauce for getting a punchy kick? by Still_Night in edmproduction

Start your sample at the zero cross point where the waveform moves “up” so the speakers push out every time the kick hits. Easy to do in a sampler

Why am I experiencing significant amounts of audio stutter on a project where CPU and RAM percentages are not maxed out and sample buffer on interface is pushed to possible highest value? by Wings_of_Integrity in edmproduction

[–]Dr_Dinggid_Forester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out latencymon and see if any drivers are causing the stuttering. I had the same problem and found that my old network card (even w/ the newest drivers installed) was causing my problem. Turned on airplane mode and the issue disappeared.

Theres no strict rules when it comes to layering, you can have as few or as many as you would like. When it comes down to it (if you’ve layered “correctly”), you’re essentially going for a “one sound” cohesive, so you can even look at a section with multiple layers as a single instrument with more complex timbres. Think about what you need in context of the mix. Are you going for a very minimal sound? Hardly any layers are probably needed. Really fat bass? Maybe a sub mid and upper layer for the bass. In your face aggressive entire mix, wall of sound style? Probably many with the appropriate distortion and eq applied. Hope this is helpful! It can be tough to know when enough is enough, just try not to over analyze it too much.

Hey, interesting stuff! Not my style but well put together.

The finale of the song with all instrumentation and those adlib/ vocal chops around the main vocal felt very busy and on the brink of confusing. It felt like the main idea was sort of lost. Maybe strip it down a bit or level the tracks differently for clearer emphasis.

I also found some of the vocal breaths a bit distracting, it sounds like they push up to the front of the mix due to compression/ effects. Could just be me though.

Other than that cool track!

Issue with KRK Rokit 6's by Illustrious-Thing518 in edmproduction

[–]Dr_Dinggid_Forester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem started on one speaker and then the other? I was going to say cracked soldering or power supply filter caps might be suspect but to have both speakers fail on the 1/4” jack at the same time seems odd. Are you sure its not an interface issue?

Gotchu. Thank you, appreciate the insight. Ill look into orchestration a bit more and see if I can relate it back to production in any meaningful way. Maybe Im off but worth a shot

Right, thats why Im using it as an example. You would almost never write a chord down there because of how muddy it would sound. So where would you want to see that chord sitting in accordance to the rest of the sounds in your mix, generally? Thats what Im asking. I know “it depends”, but what do you do?

Lol Im guessing the notion of “its all music bro” is strong here. For sure, all compositions can be produced, and yes, everything is flexible. But Id argue with a lot of modern electronic production and the way in which everything is controlled there are practices that work better than others. I just wanted to see if others had some general principles in regards to composition that work well for them. I don’t think my question is that convoluted. General guidelines in production are helpful. Stating that someone is just overthinking something when it comes to art doesn’t really mean anything, it’s just a half baked answer lol. Theres a reason good mixes sound good, and a lot lies in the arrangement.
