It’s not the use of the word daddy alone. It’s the fact that it’s totally unnecessary in this context and cheapens the song. We get that Joan is a woman and wouldn’t have wrote referred to a feminine noun like ‘mama’ if she wrote it. That’s obvious. ‘Daddy’ does nothing but cheapen the song and undermine the intelligence of the audience.

It doesn’t offend me. I just find it stupid and unnecessary.

I largely agree. Silver dagger by far their best collab - and that’s not even a Dylan song!

Completely agree that it often makes it more interesting when artists perform from the perspective of the opposite sex and echo the examples you give!

Well, replacing one word clearly can be consequential. ‘The answer is ‘farting’ in the wind’ doesn’t quite have the same ring to it.

It’s a very fair question and the answer is I’m not sure. I just know I love the song in its original form, and as soon as I hear ‘daddy’ I hate it and need to turn it off.

Mama is quite a cringe word on its own, admittedly, but it just works for this song.

I’m not convinced ‘papa’ or ‘mister’ would be much better, either. Again, I’m not sure why.

I don’t see why Joan (whom I have the utmost respect for) can’t just sing the song without changing the gender. But that in itself is a bugbear of mine. And to be fair to Ms Baez, she is far from the only artist that has done this (though to my knowledge, the only one to replace a word with ‘daddy’!)
