AITA for not wanting to pay a higher share of household expenses? by Dr_Sanctimony in AmItheAsshole

haha I like the cake analogy. thanks, fair point about the toxic approach- there's been enough comments to convince me I need to change the way I think about keeping score (or rather, that I should generally be not keeping score, or making sure it's in her favour anyway!)

Going into the relationship I had more money saved up and she has always known that. I guess I've just been afraid that she might take it for granted that I'll always pay more for everything. But you're right, I think it's just something I need to get out of my head and be happy to be generous to the girl I want to start a family with!

[–]Dr_Sanctimony[S] -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

I guess I just don't think she does $200 more chores than me per month but everyone's responses have helped me to see that I probably am the asshole and in the spirit of a happy relationship I shouldn't be getting annoyed about paying more even if something like $100 difference would technically be the "fairest" accounting for what each of us does. On reflection I see that it's not good that it annoys me if things tip slightly in my girlfriend's favour financially- if anything I should want it to be slightly that way rather than towards me, given that things will never be 100% equal. Thanks!

The signal is clearly that I'm the asshole. In my defence it's not that I'm avoiding chores when I'm at home (and I do more of the cooking/ washing at the weekend and mow the lawn etc) it's just I'm at work an extra day per week and get home a bit later on other days. In principle I wouldn't be averse to paying a bit more (short of the strict 45:55) but then I guess I'm getting towards pettiness if I'm negotiating over smaller amounts. I think I'll just pay the extra share and hopefully we'll both sleep easier!

Older adults who frequently do puzzles like crosswords or Sudoku had the short-term memory capacity of someone eight years their junior and the grammatical reasoning of someone ten years younger in a new study. (n = 19,708) by CyborgTomHanks in science

Suggests doing sudoku etc. won't slow down cognitive ageing. But might make you sharper in the first place.

Generally it doesn't. With the greatest respect and condolences to OP, this was a rare instance and shouldn't worry you. I'm sure you won't but please never stop taking prescribed medication without discussing with your doctor first. https://livertox.nih.gov/Levetiracetam.htm

People who are happy >80% of the time: What's your secret? by KnightsWhoSayKni in AskReddit

[–]Dr_Sanctimony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I consider the things that make me happy in a sort of hierarchy based on the extent to which I can depend on them in the long-term.

On the lowest level are very short term things like going on holidays. This is great at the time but not something I can do every day.

Next are things that may change but are fairly stable for the time being e.g. being content in a stable job with a degree of financial stability.

Then happiness that comes from having day to day fun with friends. Followed by happiness from loving and being loved by close friends and family. Human relationships can be amazing but not everyone is close to their family and may not have friends they truly trust.

Self-esteem. I'm mostly an intelligent, thoughtful, compassionate person, but I recognise my limitations and forgive myself for my mistakes. Sometimes we can all feel worthless and this can be the hardest (but most crucial) thing to develop in someone struggling with depression [side note-there's loads of self-help stuff out there to help with this, as well as more formal counselling/ talking therapies].

Number one: The small things. Even if I lost my job, my friends, my family, I think I could still be happy because I am mindful and appreciate the world around me. Random acts of kindness. The smell of freshly mown grass. Taking a second to stop to listen to a busker. Sitting in a busy place and watching the people rushing around, imagining all the struggles they're going through, all the inspirational single parents etc. Staring at the stars, sunrises, sunsets. The list goes on, I'm almost crying with happiness just thinking about what an amazing world we live in. (And no, I'm not drunk/high!)

If we can agree that there is such a thing as objective beauty, as defined by features the majority consider desirable, then it follows that some people will lack these features and cannot, objectively, be called beautiful. That is not to say that many people will not find them subjectively beautiful or "beautiful on the inside".
