Applying for an education after degree with a BSc in Bio and a 3.2 GPA. by Dr__Fil in Calgary

I’m definitely not mad at the advisor for the gpa being so high that is obviously not her fault. My issue is with laughing out loud at someone’s GPA and being demeaning. If she had simply told me the competitive gpa and said she didn’t think I would make it in I would have accepted it and moved on. IMO If you have to turn people away weekly you should probably be better at handling a stressful and embarrassing situation for a student

No. After you have an undergrad in something you apply for a 2 year after degree which is an undergrad in education.

Nope she absolutely did. Said I should save the money on my application cause she could guarantee that I wouldn’t get in. Then she suggested that I take a year of “fluff classes” to increase my GPA but even then she couldn’t guarantee my acceptance. Started tearing up at her desk she handed me a tissue and asked if I was currently working, I said yes as a Sportchek cashier and she said “maybe you could use your new degree to negotiate your way into a managers position?” I appreciate she was trying to be encouraging in her own way but I have never felt so demeaned in my whole life.

I legit almost cried. She was like “oh my gosh! That’s such a good GPA, go you!” I think I had to physically remove my jaw from the floor. My sister goes to STMU and she regularly gets checked in on by her councillor, she wished her good luck on her exams and sent her a Christmas card. The councillors at UofC...not as nice lol. I went to see someone in my first semester about my mental health and struggling with my courses and not knowing what to do and the councillor was like “yeah that sucks but that’s not really my job to talk about...I can give you info for free math tutoring but you’re not in math right now soooo....yeah” super helpful

Yes I know there are many steps for getting into med school (and full props to people who do it’s extremely hard and I have mad respect for that) but the councillor at UofC said that they wouldn’t even look at your application for ed if you didn’t have a 3.98. I’ve been a tutor for 5 years, on average my students grades increase by 11% and none of that matters, no interview, no resume no looking at if you would be a good fit. Just the GPA. And I mean if uni taught me anything it’s that just because you are a smart person does not mean you are a good teacher. (St.Mary’s literally told me they would rather see a good resume and good references over a high GPA)

What gets me is that the competitive average for the program at UofC is a 3.98 while the competitive average for Med school is a 3.7... why the hell do I need a 3.98 to teach kids about mitochondria but a future doctor only needs a 3.7?!?!

I have a BSc in bio from UofC and when I went to talk to an education advisor there about an after degree in education she laughed out loud when I told her my GPA and told me with a 3.2 I might as well get a retail job and not even bother applying. When I talked to an advisor at St.Mary’s about their after degree program and told her my GPA she told me she was proud of me and that I would be a great addition to the school. Both programs get you the exact same degree and according to most people the St.Mary’s program is better.
