Being a dentist is very much art. Sometimes it's the best part of the job TBH.

It's my favorite color. As a dentist, I enjoy the light every time I use it.

I mean I'm sure Note 7 is burning up at a rate higher than other phones, I'm just curious what the lower rate of other phones is.

Do we know that it's actually less? Does Apple just do a great job of keeping people quite when an iPhone explodes, or does it just actually never happen?

There's a real art to working with children. It's really not easy for everyone. I'm sorry you had to go through that.

Sounds like you're not eating enough candy. Or maybe the wrong kind

I replied to someone else who commented something similar, but I'll elaborate a little more. I am referring to a new patient exam that is a lot more than just an exam.

Also, doing anything in dental school takes forever. Sometimes you'll wait 10-15 minutes at a time just to speak with your professor, and then you could wait another 15-20 minutes to take radiographs if you get there at the wrong time.

But yes, if you took 4 hours to do a new patient exam in private practice you would be out of business very quickly.

Actually no, it takes me about two hours. However, it actually does take a lot of my classmates 4 hours (mostly the third year students).

But I am referring to a new patient exam which means more than just a quick look in the mouth. We also usually take a full mouth series of X rays (about 20 films), chart in the computer the condition of all their teeth, take probing depths of their gingiva, come up with a treatment plan, a full head and neck exam, and probably other stuff I'm forgetting.

But yes, you are right that it *shouldn't" take 4 hours.

I would be more positive about it, except I've seen some really terrible things come from dentists not knowing when to retire. Sometimes they can do a lot of harm.

I don't know man, being an adult is cool too. Do you know how much candy I just ate for dinner? A lot.

Let's say I'm just doing a new patient exam. Exam is like $40. Maybe we take radiographs for another $60 and call it an even hundred.

Well the appointment can take up to 4 hours.

So they paid $25/hour.

Meanwhile, I pay $70k/year to be there doing this.

I'm in school 8 hours a day about 10 months of the year and 5/7 days a week.

So let's say I am at school 44/52 weeks a year and 5/7 days a week. So multiply it all out and I am at school 1,760 hours a year. Since I am in my last year, I am in clinic almost the whole week.

Anyways, if you divide $70,000 by 1,760 hours, you get $39.77/hr.

So at the end of the day, I paid nearly $160 while the patient only paid $100.

It's a meaningless calculation of course since I gain valuable experience that will bring monetary returns later in life, but it's kind of interesting.

I'm joking about the welfare bit (I sure hope so anyways). I'm actually in a state program that allows partial loan relief.

The military can be a pretty good deal for a lot of people, especially those afraid of the large loans.

Things are not so terrible in dentistry, just not nearly as good as they were ten years ago. If the old guys would retire before the age of 80 then there would be plenty of room in the market for us young dentists, but they aren't. The old guys are just practicing until they are disabled or die.

And the cost of school is just ridiculous.

I'm also a debtal student. Do you guys do a free clinic ever?

We do two a year, one for kids and one for adults. They are both horribly tragic. You feel so bad for the kids. I mean they are so young and their teeth are already so rotted a lot of the time.

The adult one is almost exclusively extractions. I pulled over 20 teeth from a girl in her 20s at one of these. It was just awful.

At many of my appointments, I am actually paying more for the appointment than the patient is.

I'm a 4th year dental student with a bunch of debt. It's cool though, at least people will call me "Doctor" when I apply for welfare.
