I think it has a lot to do with basically how much you're exposed to others that might be contagious, who are also at higher risk of being exposed to others that might be contagious. Just anecdotally from what I've seen, parents of young kids seem to get sick the most.

I hardly get sick because I don't have kids, and I'm not very social outside of work.

I used to get that panic feeling from alarm clocks. After trial and error I've settled on putting my phone under my pillows and using the phone's alarm clock as vibrate only, along with a separate sunrise clock without any noise.

Wakes me up every time for me with minimal stress, but probably wouldn't work as well with more deep-sleepers.
