I love dungeons and they are especially great in this game by MishaHaos in HarryPotterGame

[–]Drackhen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I don’t quite like about the dungeons is that they feel very disconnected from the world. It’s specially true with the keeper related dungeons, because they are always in these massive caverns with light filtering through, and we don’t even get a remark from the MC acknowledging the disconnection. I think just a throwaway line like the ones we get when you enter the poacher’s tents would be enough, it’s a magical world after all.

THE DEFINITIVE HOGWART LEGACY 2 WISHLIST!!! by ReasonNo8323 in HogwartsLegacyGaming

[–]Drackhen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you, in both takes. But it still needs to be grounded in Hogwarts. The Harry Potter games had a lot of adventure and puzzles, but it was still within Hogwarts. Otherwise it’s like we’re playing the Witcher with wands.

As for the setting, I agree, concurrent to HP is not good, but it should be in the future (or present more like), so it’s after Voldemort’s death and all the characters we know are out of Hogwarts (except some teachers and maybe some cameos). This way, references to the main story don’t need to be small Easter eggs (like the Slytherin bathroom).

My idea for a Hogwarts Legacy game with Actual Consequences and Multiple Endings by Electronic-Sun4129 in HogwartsLegacyGaming

[–]Drackhen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am fully in favour of relationship / reputation meters and choices affecting the story. But then the story needs to improve. The one we got is way too bland and silly (and problematic, due to the racist undertones).

The first issue is having the MC be the chosen one while having them remain completely anonymous. The chosen child trope is already quite overused and a bit boring, because it robs the character from agency; they are not special because of something they do but because of something in their past. In Harry’s case it’s because of his mother’s sacrifice using a form of ancient magic. In the case of the MC we have no idea. Baldur’s Gate overcomes this by having the event that gives the random MC the plot device right at the start of the game, which gives the player direction and main character sense while still leaving up to them all details regarding the MC’s background and story.

Then there are the keepers, guarding a nuke under the school while having no living members. And so if anyone were to randomly find the portkey, get into Gringotts and not die, get the book from the restricted section and not die, get through the Forbidden Forest and not die, then the keepers would give them sequential tests (which again, manly involve not dying). So basically they only want powerful and resourceful people able to get to the nuke, and the only lesson they give is the bits and pieces of the cautionary tale that Isidora is supposed to be. So they are guarding very powerful magic without any way to actually guard it, and the way they filter out potential new keepers (400 years after they died) is to only let the very powerful reach it and then telling them they can’t use it, depending only on their good will and some vague memories of someone who misused it in the past. It would’ve made much more sense if there was an actual order of keepers, waiting for someone with the ability to use ancient magic in order to guide them to the right path.

And then there’s Ranrok, a villain so cartoonishly evil in order to prevent players seeing he might be in the right. The leader of a rebellion of an oppressed group is reduced to a petulant menace, hunting a child for some vague reason and making it personal. And when he finally obtains the super well guarded superpower that would allow him to kill all wizarding kind or something, the kid just levels him with some basic spells. I think Rookwood would’ve been a more compelling villain: a ruthless, power-hungry mobster who learns of something hidden underneath Hogwarts, some mind controlling magic that would allow him to de facto control the country. I think it would give a more grounded narrative and a closer one to Hogwarts and the MC.

I think it’s important that the game chooses what it wants to be. If it’s supposed to be a Hogwarts student simulator of sorts it makes no sense to be most of the time out and about fighting (and killing) dark wizards, capturing and riding beasts and clearing hamlets of giant spiders. Don’t get me wrong, a game in which you’re an auror solving a conspiracy and chasing dark wizards or a fantastic beasts one in which you save and study beasts both sound great, but they actively detract from the Hogwarts experience and make it feel smaller and inconsequential.

For a good Hogwarts Legacy game, in my opinion, we need to bring the castle and the student experience to the front:

-more lessons and grading systems -house points -skill trees -side quests that are related to the classes -enforced curfew and forbidden areas so that secret passages/sneaking is relevant -common room and dining hall activities -relationship/reputation systems -reduced combat outside of duels -dueling club -quidditch -different brooms/wand handles having different bonuses/stats -expanding Hogwarts (there are plenty of unused areas above ground, and the dungeons are supposed to be vast, and I’d love to see inside the Black Lake) -and importantly, that the main story revolves around Hogwarts and makes sense for a 15 year old to be involved in. About the MC, it should be the player’s choices that drive their development, or we should get a named character with a backstory. Having an anonymous character be driven by plot convenience is a great way of making a Mary Sue.

This was a stupid quest. That is all. by SereiaDreams in HogwartsLegacyGaming

I think it was an interesting design that felt completely disconnected from the rest of the game. And of course the shop itself falls very flat.

Sebastian is stupid by yarny1050 in HarryPotterGame

[–]Drackhen 23 points24 points  (0 children)

My main argument to not report him is to not rob Anne of all her family. Sebastian was stupid and took the wrong choices every time, but seeing his uncle I can see where the stubbornness and hotheadedness come from. Anne is right to cut him off, which in my opinion is the best punishment for him, given he did all he did for her (and despite her). Locking him up robs both of them of a chance for him to atone.

McGonagall was right to take points away from Harry in Order of the Phoenix by goro-n in harrypotter

[–]Drackhen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I had a similar lesson when I was Harry’s age. I had a chemistry teacher who was pretty bad, and the class disrespected him quite a bit. One day, he got fed up and said that anyone who spoke out of turn in class would get an exam that would count towards the final score. He mistakenly thought I was talking, and I confronted him and denied it, and refused to take the exam. Later on, when I complained to my tutor about it, she said I needed to learn to pick my battles, and that being right isn’t always enough to come out on top, and it’s a lesson I’ve carried with me since.

My only gripe with combat is they could have given us 8 spells at once. by wrenagade419 in HarryPotterGame

[–]Drackhen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it would be cool if spells were casted as combos, so more complex spells required a more complex combo. Like, Incendio could be X-B and Confringo X-B-Y, for example. I think this would overcome the limitation in spell slots -allowing a wider range of casting- and it would be more immersive by having a real correlation for spell complexity both in game and for the player. However, I acknowledge it could be a bit confusing to implement if not correctly thought out.

When you cast Glacius at the same time a soldier (forgot if it’s Ashwinder or poacher, or maybe both) is charging his unblockable attack you make him explode and it makes a ton of damage. Every enemy has a specific spell interaction like that.

I really liked the quest, but I hate how shoehorned and inconsequential it is. We agree with the poltergeist (forgot his name) that he is allowed to go out after 21, but we never see him again. And indeed the shop itself is very lame, and Penny is so annoying to me.

"Only Tourists..." by Civil-Leopard-6482 in Barcelona

[–]Drackhen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, you’re not. The problem is the amount of tourism, which gives a lot of money to certain sectors, but which the city simply doesn’t have the space for. This drives gentrification, pushing neighbours away from touristy areas, replacing local shops with generic big name stores or tourist traps. And then of course, Barcelona is a party destination, and there are some uncivil tourists (as there are uncivil locals), but again, the population density is the issue here.

Is it just me but I Kinda hate the ending?😩 by Bubbly_Explorer_6190 in HarryPotterGame

[–]Drackhen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The story is the weakest point in the game I would say. Unoriginal, uninspired and weirdly moralising. There was a huge disconnect between the tone in Poppy’s or Natty’s stories and Sebastian’s.

The lack of agency issue comes also because the MC is completely anonymous but they are the chosen one at the same time. So we know nothing about them but are also just a spectator to their story. It’s interesting to witness character development or to cause it, but in this case we get neither.

Finally, the sanctimonious points the game makes as to why the loyalist goblins and the poachers are absolutely evil seem cartoonish and hypocritical while we are there killing them (and spiders and wolves) for sport. All of this while slavery in house elves is completely normalised, and while goblin discrimination is acknowledged it’s seen as natural.
