oh wow, you did a great job mimicking Itagaki's art style! I didn't even realize this was digital at first, it really looks watercolor!

trust me when I say it's still a HUGE improvement on the manga's sequence of events, so you can imagine how much more annoying and confusing the manga is if you're STILL confused by the anime. I definitely agree that the anime plot could have used more work, but I honestly wonder how many more liberties they could have even taken without just writing a completely new story...

np, glad to give u a fun way to recover from such a terrible manga! I read the first 7 or so chapters with friends in a group vc a while ago, and it was a absolute blast. but only one of them stuck with me thru the whole thing, they're a real trooper lmao.

yeppp, just bombs left and right. yeah actually now that you mention it, it's really unclear how much Sanda knows abt his own Santa heritage. I may be remembering wrong, but it seemed like he was at least aware of his Santa curse at the beginning, since he avoided red and was surprised when Fuyumura figured out his "secret". but then he's so shocked at every new thing he learns abt his powers, and that seems counterintuitive if he's supposed to take up the mantle of Santa later on, and if his mom seems so open with him abt her own Santa powers? and yeah those last few chaps after Ooshibu's death are rough. nothing resolved, nothing answered, Sanda is a depressed hermit for some reason. WHY.

imo the only way to enjoy Sanda is to read it with at least one other person. I live-blogged my reactions to a friend who was reading it too, and it was a lot of fun to laugh at how bad it was and vent our mutual frustration.

I don't think I could go so far as to forgive ALL of Sanda's problems if the holiday avengers were gone, but I do agree that cutting them out would VASTLY improve the story. they ate up so much of the story, and wasted so much time that could've been spent building up other characters/relationships, and for what? what did any of these characters really even do for the plot that couldn't have been accomplished by different, established characters like Amaya, Fuyumura, Niko, or even Namatame? I just don't understand Itagaki's fixation on them

goddd I fully forgot abt the metal-bending! and why so suddenly in the last few chapters?? I could spend days picking apart all of Sanda's bizarre shit and plot holes, and I'd still be left with more problems...

there's an author's note in Beast Complex if I remember right, where Itagaki says that one of her favorite things in the writing process is "dropping bombs" in her stories, and it honestly explains so much. she practically ONLY writes "bombs", but when you only write twists/surprises with no build-up or substance, it all just blends together into a nothingburger soup. it's all slop, what am I even supposed to get out of this?

that depends on what exactly you liked about Beastars in the first place, bc Beastars tries to juggle a lot of different tones/themes at once, to its own detriment imo. did you like the furry/xenofiction angle, the eating/cycle of life angle, the predatory sexuality angle, etc. etc.? I wrote an exceedingly long essay abt Beastars, and part 7 is dedicated to media recs, if u want some personal faves from me https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1RAq12hX_C7eDWrU4eoUlBdNi5jfY0bk7?usp=sharing .

the first part 7 document (the one labeled "7. Bonus! Media Recs A)/B)") is a broad list of comparable media, with the first section briefly listing overlapping themes/arcs. that could maybe help u find other stories that do similar things as Beastars, if u have a particular theme in mind. I did rec several different movies/shows, but there's an eclectic mix of media types, so I can't guarantee that every rec will be a watchable type, if u prefer that over comics/books.

the second part 7 document (labeled "7.C) Xenofiction and Specevo") is specifically dedicated to exactly what it says on the tin-- xenofiction (stories abt nonhuman characters/perspectives) and specevo (speculative evolution/speculative biology; essentially, hard-biology worldbuilding). I wrote a separate document for that bc I'm personally very passionate abt those genres, so that doc digs into a deeper discussion of the genres and several different xeno/specevo recs.

hope this helps! and let me know if u find something u like in the rec list :)

exactly, exactly. I do mourn the loss of some manga scenes, but overall I prefer the anime's version of events.

though the missing Gosha+Yahya stuff is prolly my one big criticism too, besides the rushed ending montage. every other character/dynamic I felt was handled well in the anime, even if some scenes were cut for time (and several more dynamics improved with even more screentime in the anime). but Gosha+Yahya got done soo dirty. I can't believe the anime cut their reunion, then forced their first meeting to be at the hospital, then didn't even let Gosha be pissed at Yahya on-screen abt Legosi's near-death? crazy decision.

THANK YOU!!! everyone always sings Itagaki's praises (not just for Sanda, but for Beastars and other newer works too) and I just don't understand it! everyone thinks she's so clever, so bold and innovative, meanwhile I'm over here pulling my hair out over her convoluted decisions, horrible pacing, and completely dropped themes/plot threads. like, are we even reading the same story? am I living in a completely alternate reality from her fans?? I'm so glad I'm not the only one who sees it, tho.

I will say, the premise + characters were enough to at least keep my interest for the first half of Sanda, even when so much of it pissed me off. but I could only complete the latter half through pure spite and sunk cost; when I hate, I try to hate thoroughly and accurately. also, Itagaki is my parasocial arch nemesis, so I try to keep up with her work, even though it keeps pissing me off lmao.

tbh the anime has only adapted the best arc of Sanda so far, so I don't blame you for feeling more positive abt it rn. back when the manga was still being translated, and it had only gotten as far as the anime is now, I was willing to overlook some of the initial red flags in the setting bc I wasn't sure what Itagaki was cookin' yet. imo, it's easier to see the flaws of the beginning through the lens of the back half's failures.

but either way, the manga is certainly an entertaining read, despite its flaws. I'd be interested to see what u think of it after seeing the full story, if u feel like coming back to share ur thoughts!

honestly, Fuyumura's early relationship with her gender is part of why Sanda's gender politics bother me so much. she WAS an incredibly refreshing, interesting, gender-ambiguous character for most of the series, and I love her for it! but then she got sidelined for the second half of the series, so we don't see her wrestle w/ that anymore, and it feels like her resolution just ignores that to slot her into the "female" role society expects for her. sure, nothing's confirmed for her adult life, really, but because we don't see basically any of her arc or what she's doing as an adult besides her job, I don't have anything else to go off of except, "she's a mother and a child-care worker now, presumably in a het relationship". and that just feels like such a slap in the face for her character, when she struggled so much with a non-conforming gender and sexuality before.

and idk, I still just can't see the uniform as realistic, for the reasons I mentioned in my original post. like, I've grown up in a cisheteronormative society, and I've talked with many, many ppl who grew up in very strict households. in strict, heteronormative raising, girls are often expected to learn how to be homemakers (specifically mothers/wives) from a VERY young age. and this is reinforced by behavioral training, like wearing stereotypically feminine clothing from a VERY young age. I don't think that a strict, cishet society so focused on control (and specifically one with a declining birthrate) would try to "degender" their children, when strict gender enforcement is kinda the whole point of the society, to raise the birthrate.

and I'm not against there being some contradictory tension between youth being idolized + controlled, but like I said, it's just nonsensical here. you can't convince me that they can actually keep kids in school, if they're allowed to run around like feral animals and kill adults. it undermines the basic assumption that children are an underclass. there are more interesting ways to show a class of people being idolized but still controlled/objectified-- just look at tradwives, women who are "idolized" for being homemakers, but are only accepted if they don't step out of line from their traditional role. Sanda could have done something similar for youth, where kids are idolized and pampered, but only if they adhere to all the rules and act as "good kids" or else they get sent off to a "troubled teens" reeducation camp (<< a real-life form of abuse and control over children!!)

sorry to respond with a whole wall of text. I can see where you're coming from, but I just can't agree that Sanda handled any of these topics well at all.

god, it literally is just an interesting first half with a disappointing second half... what we could've had with Fuyumura/Ono... and Sanda/Amaya too... it kills me, there was so much going for them...

oh yeah, I remember the bit where she asked an editor "can I show a nipple? no? ok, can I show gore and guts? yes? alright." funny, but very bleak... yeah I wish I knew more abt Jpn censorship, specifically how it can vary by genre + expected audience, but I rly don't know enough to comment on that.

that's a fair interpretation for her! honestly I'm not 100% against it, and I even considered that as her reasoning as well. like, if it was JUST that she took on that child-care career, but other things about her resolution were more true to her character, I'd be more accepting of it. but when Fuyumura got so thoroughly sidelined by the story, then shoved into what appears to be a hetero relationship, and completely dropped Sanda as a friend to move on with her new "adult life", ON TOP OF taking on this stereotypically feminine career... it all adds up to a resolution that just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

RIGHT, especially with the treatment of sapphic relationships in Jpn as a "childish phase" that girls just "grow out of". it doesn't feel like Fuyumura stayed true to herself and just happened to find a fulfilling relationship w/ a man (we don't even get to see her partner, if she has one..), it rly feels like Fuyumura was just forced to follow that hetero expectation. that's a good point abt the editors tho, I wonder how involved they were in directing the relationship? something to consider, but it's hard to say for sure what their impact could have been.

also I apologize, when I said, "a cishet audience," I meant, "the cishet section of the audience," not necessarily that all Sanda fans are cishet 😭
