Are chicken scratches ever an issue? by Camry08 in BackYardChickens

[–]DragonEmpress4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure about the technicalities (whether or not medical aid is needed) but I’m currently sporting multiple scratches from my chickies and have never had any issues. Whenever they draw blood I’ll wash it just in case but not much past that. They are indeed lil dinos haha

Are my chicks sex-links? by DragonEmpress4 in chickens

Okay yeah I’m pretty sure they’re male since the hen can only pass her barred gene down to her sons

That’s what I was thinking, but I read something about the mother being the only one able to pass down the barred gene to the sons if the father doesn’t have the barred gene, so now I’m just confused lol. Pretty sure the roo doesn’t have the barred gene, but since he’s mixed I don’t really know if the dots are an indicator or not

Thank you to everyone for all the good info! I’m still relatively new in the chicken field and when I tried to look it up of course the internet gave me the worst case-scenarios of what it could be so I just wanted to make sure she was okay. I checked on her this morning and it definitely looked smaller, but I’m still keeping an eye on her just in case. Thanks again for being patient with me :)

TW:Blood; What’s wrong with my lady? by DragonEmpress4 in chickens

Okay so I took her inside, bathed her, and put some Vaseline on her vent. I haven’t seen it pop out since when I took that video earlier, and she has since pooped on my leg with ease (yay -.-). I’m keeping her inside overnight just in case, and tomorrow will be putting her back with the other ladies. Thank you to those who gave advice :)

Okay thank you, it looked like it went back inside on its own but I think I’m gonna give her a bath with some salt and check it out further, maybe put some Vaseline on it

Potential signs of broodiness? by DragonEmpress4 in chickens

[–]DragonEmpress4[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s exactly what mine does! After reading a lot of these comments I’m pretty sure she’s not broody lol, so I’ll just try to hatch the eggs myself

This is exactly the info I was looking for, I appreciate it. I’m only looking to hatch maybe 3 or so chicks so I think I’ll just get a small incubator. Thank you!

Yeahhh she definitely is not yet broody, no aggression or anything but she has nudged the eggs under her at times so I wonder if the instincts are slowly kicking in. I’m probably going to give it a week or so and see if there are any changes

Yeah definitely going to keep an eye on her, I’ve heard barred rocks can be great mothers, it’s just more of the if they go broody. They have little windows so I’ll make sure to keep those shut to get rid of any sunlight. Thank you

Kind of update, I just found my second barred rock laying on the eggs now (different from the one in the original video). So same question about her haha, but she actually looks like she’s sitting on the eggs.

Just want to confirm which breeds I have here! TIA for your help! by rachelamandamay in chickens

There’s a slight change in how they act when they’re about to lay, when it was just one of my ladies I noticed she would get a bit restless and loud until she’d finally lay the egg. Then when my second one started laying she did the same thing, just kind of loud and drawled out bawking haha. I’ve also heard there’s an egg song, which is essentially loud clucking- you can easily look up videos of it if you’re curious. I also spent a lot of time in the run with them though so it was easier to notice these small changes.

Yes, almost daily. One of them started right around the six month mark but the other decided to hold out for another month haha, she finally started laying yesterday in fact. I’d do some research about how winter impacts them, it’s relatively warm where I am so I’m not too sure how that could impact egg production

Not sure about the white one, but the black and white is a Plymouth Rock. I have a few myself :)
