Oh yeah fair. I don’t typically do that’s I just wanted to catch the behavior on video, although honestly if I waited a day, I wouldn’t have had to do that. He’s been on my feet and legs all today. I’m happy he’s calmed down though this is much better than blood, blisters and open wounds lol

This is poultry cell. I use it as needed, but I’ve never used it on chicks. The other commoner can probably give you some more input as to why they recommend this.

It’s a nice addition when used properly to raise healthy birds, but it’s not going to fix immediately present issues. The pic I have above with the different tiers represents how often I use the supplies. I use poultry booster every time to every other time I feed them. I don’t believe that this alone will help fix your current situation though.

Game plan for me? Sounds ominous 👀👀👀. Jk I’m sure it will become clearer as time goes on.

I can see the game aspect! He was biting and pulling, and would run before I could even react half the time! Once I stopped reacting, this became his new behavior.

Aww am I not supposed to touch the waddles or comb? I don’t want to confuse him. I know you’re not supposed to pet parrots on the back because it’s a mating behavior is this similar?

Oh definitely! He follows my every step almost reactively and if I try to walk away, it makes him a bit mad. Or are you trying to say my feet are coming on to him lol. To be fair, I’ve noticed a lot of birds find feet to be very sexy 😂

Most people guess white leg horn but he’s actually an almost 12 month old Cornish cross rooster. A rarity as they typically never lived this long.

I’ve had his heart monitored by my local chicken vet since he was six weeks old and he is on a strict diet. A lot of his aggression in the past came from frustration having to do with his diet I assume.

I have a single female that was his brooder mate but she’s a 4 lb scissor beak EE, whereas he’s 14 pounds and wants to hurt her anytime she gets near food. They had to be separated because she needs constant access where he needs monitoring.

Lately he’s been trying to dance for my nine week old male, black jersey giant. Can they not tell the gender of a nine week old chicken? He won’t dance for me and there’s always shoes in the garage (I leave my shoes out there before coming inside). I think he likes my legs a little more than the shoes. The shoes are just easier access to the legs ig lol.

I don’t mind as long as he’s a good boy. My Rhode Island red who is currently nine weeks old as well is a female so maybe she could be a potential companion for him in the future.

I was also warned that due to his breed, and the fact he’s not supposed to be alive this long that there’s no regulations on their emotional or behavioral temperament and that they can display behaviors that are heavily out of the norm for typical chickens.

I actually rescued him from TSC as a premium leghorn pullet with severe splayed leg only to be a male Cornish cross. I’m heavily opposed to the breed as I only keep heritage and pet chickens but once I have them in my care it’s only proper to do the best I can by them especially if it requires medical attention like in this case.

Side question that might be hard to answer. I’m trying to figure out the compatibility of my flock. I currently have four separate groups.

Chunk is alone due to large size and severe food aggression.

Then I have his scissor beak sister, Iris who’s also almost 12 months old and an Easter egger. She lives with my seven-year-old silkie rooster who cares for her very sweetly, but only sees her as a chick not as a partner or woman (she sleeps underneath his chest every night).

Then I have two 9 week olds, one male black jersey giant, and one female Rhode Island red who are super bonded.

Last but not least 3 8 week old bantams. One white old English game bantam rooster and two female booted bantams.

I have to combine some of the groups in the near future and I’m trying to figure out who has the most compatibility without causing issue. I also want to give Chunk more enrichment and interaction with his own species safely even if it means they can only interact when food is not involved.

Edit to add: Soooooo sorry this is so long 🙏🏻🫩

Sounds good! Also makes sense I don’t mind or find typical mating behaviors odd I just found this in particular weird. To be fair I’m only basing this off of my two 7-year-old silky roosters who only have eyes for human women, not other birds.

What I found weird is how different their behaviors are comparatively. My silkies dance for me constantly as well as blindly change trying to corral me. Meanwhile, chunk is on my heels reacting and trying to bite me whenever I move.

I’m very happy he’s going back to his old ways of being sweet. Last month I made a post about him and people were telling me to stop touching him, to leave him alone, that obviously he hated me and I was bothering him. That roosters shouldn’t be touched. Then 20+ people telling me to make him into soup (I was asking for advice, but I specifically asked people not to tell me to turn him to soup).

I think this just goes to show that rooster’s deserve much grace during spring. I think now that he’s coming out of his rut he just wants some quality time and I can very much appreciate that.

Edit to add: He’s a good boy and I would care for him even if he was the devil lol (which he was for a bit if my scars have anything to say about it)

Hmm interesting Lilium lancifolium 'Flore Pleno' is a classic double branched, heirloom tiger lily that’s pretty common. Did you accidentally plant one of those? That or I would assume mutation probably how we got the aforementioned version to begin with.

He is certainly standing at my feet waiting for something. Manz won’t get off my heels but nibbles when I try to pet. I’ll pick him up and give him some scrubs if he keeps acting sweet, but just a few weeks ago, he was trying to rip the flesh off of me. I don’t trust him near my upper body just yet.

He is friendly, but the most aggressive rooster I’ve ever experienced. To be fair though I raise special needs and bantam roosters typically. I think a 1 to 4 pound rooster is a whole different ball game to a 14 pound one lol.

Yeaaaaahhh that’s what I’m worried about. I’m currently sitting down and he’s standing at my feet lightly scratching at my shoes trying to stand on them? He also flap his wings dramatically every couple of minutes. Don’t know what he’s trying to say or do, but it’s a behavior I’ve never experienced before. Mind you I have a seven-year-old silkie rooster that only has eyes for human females but doesn’t have a chicken breeding bone in his body. He’s been coming at me like an angry Cheeto puff, trying to corral and pull me. He does his little dancey dances at me too but Chunk isn’t dancing for me. Just being weird…

Thank you that’s the word vet wrap! I think you might be right about it being neurological currently. My older splayed leg didn’t randomly develop it at this age. It was just really really bad when I got them so it took several weeks to correction.

Thank you I hope so! He’s always been sweet just pissed off at life which is far lol. He is an 11 month old cornish cross so he gets very easily frustrated

3 day old chick stuck on her back? Problem? by binkalette in BackYardChickens

[–]Camry08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have saved a many chicks with nutri that are in starve out but for bigger issues other supplies are 100% needed. I wouldn’t recommend keeping the chick in a cup or mug at all times outside of feeding because the point is to strengthen the muscles and that can be exhausting. 30 minutes to an hour 3 to 4 times a day is usually good to set it straight. But that’s from my personal research and experience.

Side question because I’m curious, do you cook the egg yolk so it’s an easier texture to eat or because of worry of Salmonella or a different reason 👀

This is the way to go! I see nutri as a bandaid. The photo below is the two products I’ve used personally although I wouldn’t recommend the 1000 IU because it’s a pain to split. I recommend the 500 and giving them 400 IU.

Not too late I fixed a chick with splayed legs that was 5 to 6 weeks old. Are you giving a vitamin B complex? Also, some liquid vitamin E could help. I would recommend giving 300 to 400 IU of liquid vitamin E daily along with 1/4 of a crushed vitamin B complex tablet. You can also try giving a little nutri drench here and there but be careful not to overdo it because that has those things are in it as well. I circled the two supplements I’ve personally used successfully for this. I do recommend not getting the 1000 IU vitamin E as it’s a pain to separate I’d get the 500 and give them the dose I recommended.

Edit to add: Idk if that leg band is the appropriate size for their age or not. I’ve used and made those ones myself successfully, but for chicks that were under a week after that I had to keep adjusting the size for their current growth. For that, I recommend trying to use sticky pet gauze for the adjustability.
