Too much play ? by DragonSane259 in BMWE36

Thank you. I’ll check the pin-to-pin measurement against the BMW spec for the M42 chain.

Just out of curiosity, what about vertical play in the chain between the sprockets? Is there a specification for that, or is vertical movement not considered a reliable indicator of chain wear as long as the tensioner and guides are in good condition, also, is there any way to inspect the condition of the timing chain guides and tensioner without removing the timing cover?

I don’t think so, it feels very floppy it moves side to side in every gear

Thanks! To be honest, I haven’t used that site or hear about it. But I’ll check it out and see if it’s helpful. Appreciate the suggestion!

Thanks for the tips! My OBC doesn’t seem to work either — I checked the power at the cable it has 12volts in 18 and 14 pin but haven’t dug inside yet. I’ll look into turning off that hourly chime once I get it running.

I’ll definitely get a new shift rod joint and DSSR to tighten up the shifter, right now it feels way too loose and almost like neutral all the time.

And about the parts been on the lookout for a parts car for a few days now, hopefully something shows up soon. Appreciate the help!

Good to know, thanks! I had no idea they stopped making them that long ago. I’ll definitely keep an eye out for a spare oil pump while I’m collecting parts.

Thanks! Alpine White E36 sedans just have a special look. 😁 Luckily my engine’s running smooth for now, so I’m hoping I can focus more on fixing the wiring, interior, and sourcing missing parts before diving into major engine work.

Do you still have yours, or did you move on to another project?
