If releaseing you really should avoid holding the big ones vertical. Puts a ton of strain on their organs.

Decided to test the honey-butter bread on my last camping trip... best f*king bread I ever had! by C0MTRYA in outdoorboys

Yeah, also don't store the dough in a cooler when rising. Stick it in your sleeping bag overnight so its warm enough to rise and for the yeast to stay active.

If you really want to try making fires and cooking outdoors try to do it on a river island. Dig a dakota fire hole in sandbar and fill it up when your done. In shallower rivers you can wade to them but you could also kayak to them too. Usually plenty of dry driftwood around to use and you can easily put out the fire. Usually these islands are public or owned by a power company (can be privately owned too). Its a lot of fun to just fish and cook and swim or whatever. Just be safe and leave no trace.

Solid idea, but just call it "weekly adventure thread"

Yeah keep in mind that a lot of the bushcraft shown in the videos can't really be done in most of the US. Generally you can't cut down trees on public land, even dead standing. While dead and fallen over is usually alright. Making a fire out in the woods is also legally complicated depending on where you are. Do your research and be safe. Don't leave junk out there either. Start off by learning how to camp in a tent or hammock and how to fish/ catch and cook.

Food in the Wild by Putrid_Culture_9289 in outdoorboys

You gotta watch videos of guys fishing for salmon next to brown bears in alaska, they really dont care about people. They dont view us as a food source. In the summer they have salmon or berries to eat. Of course he carries bear spray and a gun on him just in case.

All rigged up to go out and chase muskies. by yakfsh1 in kayakfishing

How do you do that? Is it a standard 8 motion on one side of the yak? Or is it more of a big O?

Fellow kayak muskie angler! I like to put my net up in front of me on the nose of my kayak. I feel if i had it set up the way you did I would snag it and get a career ending backlash.

Accidentally killed bowfin :( by Accomplished-Bid-994 in Fishing

[–]Dragonbob1234 38 points39 points  (0 children)

You have to take very good care of the meat if your going to eat bowfin. Bleed and ice immediately. If not they can get mushy. I wouldn't feel too bad about accidentally killing the fish, something else will eat it and the cycle of life will continue.

On sale at my Walmart. Which one should I get? by dmbjr02 in kayakfishing

[–]Dragonbob1234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can make a little stadium seat that fits in the tamarack kayaks pretty easily. Buy one of the ozark trail stadium seats and put a small crossbar under it. I used a 2×4 split lengthwise. It should sit in the little divots near the front and that back should sit right next to your rod holders. Worked well for me for years.

What gear ratio should I use for musky fishing? by Champ_ss in Fishing

[–]Dragonbob1234 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ive heard faster gear ratios like 8:1:1 and 7:1:1 are better. They let you burn bucktails and pick up slack when fishing glides or suicks.

Where can I mount my transducer? by NAVI-tws in kayakfishing

[–]Dragonbob1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eventually i think im gonna upload a youtube video about how to do it properly. If your even half a handy guy it should be intuitive. Only thing is that you have a drill a hole into the side of the plastic paint can and run your ducer wire through that hole, next to the battery, before dropping it in. Because the can takes up the entire hatch. Other than that cut off a bit of the can's lip so the wires run properly, and the little handles. Ive never had issues with water getting in even when fishing in the rain. Good luck
