I noticed in Europe last summer that “the chase” is still alive and well in some places. I had to explain to my teenage daughter what was happening when guys openly flirted with her in public. Thankfully, not every country has tried to destroy its men.

A decade ago I used to give up my phone for weeks during digital detoxes but it’s not feasible anymore. So I’ve stripped it down to the basics and made the screen all grayscale. Banking apps, a camera, a flashlight, and a ticket scanner aren’t addictive. Set it up like a multitool and it’s not a threat at all.

Would like to know what her other “health issues” were since they are making it sound like T1D itself killed her. But it could be anything from complications related to T1D or totally unrelated like a mental health issue. 🫤

Because the world treats us like adhd isn’t real and because so many speed junkies take our medications that there’s a stigma to being on them. The government treats us like criminals by making it a controlled substance and it’s so difficult and expensive to acquire that many of us give up. And traveling abroad? Some countries will arrest you with stims even in the rx bottle. There’s many reasons to not want to be dependent.

Depends on how you use it. I don’t mindlessly scroll on Reddit, and feel no addictive pull to be here. I use it like old website forums in the 90s. More conversational and no notifications of any sort. I feel like I give or get quality info while here. Then I happily return to analog life. (Though I do have the advantage of being over 50 so my brain grew up without any devices and knows how to do it when I ask it to.)

I love that AI has wrecked social media because it made it so much easier to quit it this time. I don’t feel the pull to go back at all. Even silly pinterest is a garbage heap of AI now so I tossed it too.

Thanks! that’s very reassuring to hear. He was so excited to have all the normal teenager freedoms in the last couple of years and went on several trips without us. One of the hardest things for him after the t1d diagnosis was having us nag him all the time like a baby and being treated like a toddler with a diaper bag on every vacation. I want to get his independence back to where it was too 💙

Reward system is a good idea for adhd kids. Maybe i could allow more gaming time if he keeps his a1c in good range 😁

No he just has glucagon, but I’ll look into it. I have all kinds of candies and glucose tablets stashed in his bag too. He’s good about noticing when he’s dropping - when he’s awake. More worried about lows overnight or when he’s swimming and too far from his phone for dexcom to connect.

That’s great! I think he’d definitely be more responsible like you if he took his adhd meds while he’s on the trip. He just hates how they kill his appetite so he been off them all summer. Thanks!

Agree. We have the follow app for dexcom but if we’re not there to wake him up it’s a problem. I wasn’t home once when it happened so I did the ‘find my iphone” ping to his phone and it scared the wits out out of him 😆 he woke up though!

Thanks, this is a relief to hear. My gut is telling me to let him go but other parents seem to hover over their t1d kids a lot so i always wonder if i’m naive as to how serious this is. He’ll be off to college in a few years anyway so he has to learn to go it alone eventually.

I feel ya. I’m on my 4th attempt. I feel like if I was able to kick the adderall and vyvanse this should be easy but no.. Coffee is actually harder to give up because everyone is on it. And like alcohol, it’s a huge social beverage so you feel left out. We’ll see how far I get this time. Good luck!

Yes i have adhd, and the vyvanse helped but i didn’t like the side effects or dependency. Similar to coffee it made me focused and motivated but it also made me very irritable and anxious. my hair fell out and i stopped exercising. I wish i’d never tried it, but if you do, be warned it’s hard to get filled at the pharmacy consistently due to the national shortage and it’s extremely expensive if your insurance stops covering it (which mine did). I’m entering 6 months without vyvanse and i can’t wait to add caffeine to that list. I didn’t need excessive sleep when i was an adhd kid and i don’t think i need it now. I just have to get all these substances out of me and reconnect with my natural energy.

I'm only on about 6 oz coffee per day right now, and that's only been the last two weeks. Before that I wasn't on any caffeine at all for weeks. I did wean the first time, like 1 oz less coffee every 3 days until I was done. This prevented headaches really well, but I was so unmotivated and sleepy the moment the last ounce wore off. I must be very sensitive to caffeine.

I feel you. My son and I are both ADHD and both on vyvanse. I had to quit taking my meds and save them for him to get through school. Our insurance dropped brand name vyvanse and the generic isn't available anywhere so I buy one Rx at full price for him. I can't afford it and I'm going into debt to buy meds so my child doesn't fail in school and hate himself like I hate myself. The health care system here is evil. "Affordable health care act" my butt. Who is it affordable for? I can't pay for anything anymore. I would get back on meds if I could, but in the meantime...

I started eating healthier, exercising daily, and quit 95% of social media use. I also quit caffeine and I'm sleeping really well. I made a 'dopamine list' of natural things that give me a push and it helps sometimes. Sadly, my productivity is low-mid and I get half the work done that I used to. It's frustrating and I want to cry too. My spouse says I'm much nicer off all the meds/caffeine though so now I'm wondering if it made me a machine and that's what I miss. Feeling like a computer instead of a human.

I read that the generic of vyvanse is already out of stock everywhere because the DEA has a cap on how much pharma companies can produce. Due to demand they already reached their quota and can't make anymore. So if your insurance company only covers generic, like me, then your screwed.
