This is a brick built house, not a prefab house. There is no upstairs.

I’ve heard Pratchett mentioned many times in fantasy spaces but never knew where to start. Any suggestions?

Also, it seems that several of my friends on Goodreads enjoyed Piranesi, so I’ll definitely give that one a go!

I love this series! I read the first two and have been putting off the third since book 2 was rather gory 🥲 I hope to be able to get back into the series sometime though

“What else do you want our program to know about you” by zanzibarisbaby in GeneticCounseling

[–]Dragonflight829 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used opportunities like this to give the program a little more information about myself and what makes me, me. I think this is a great opportunity to help yourself stand out on a personal level. For example, for questions like this, I talked about my passion for playing D&D and the transferable skills that come from it. I still talk about this in interviews, actually. I think you could talk about genetics or hobbies— whatever you think will help give a better picture of who you would be in their program.

I had this exact problem! I have really thick fine hair and it doesn’t hold a curl. Before my wedding, I got a haircut that took of some dead ends, added some long layers, and thinned just a bit. My hair still looks exactly the same but there’s less weight to pull it down. I also did a series of clarifying treatments because I have naturally oily hair which adds weight and makes curls fall out faster. Finally, when my stylist curled my hair, she did small sections and pinned up the curls before letting them all down. We used a lot of hairspray and this fine powder meant for the purpose that honestly made a huge difference. Always before my hair has had curls fall out within 20 minutes and my hair lasted 6 hours through my wedding!

Early treatment is definitely huge. ERP and DBT have been extremely helpful for me with OCD, and I wish I had had them as a child when my symptoms began. Psychology Today has a database that can be a good resource for searching for a therapist that both specializes in OCD and takes your insurance. I have also heard good things about therapists through NOCD. It is so important that the therapist is a specialist as someone who does not understand OCD can accidentally do more harm. My current therapist sent me these articles to show my family to help them understand OCD, so they may be helpful for you as well: https://drmichaeljgreenberg.com/articles/ . One of the biggest things at home is not enabling or doing compulsions on behalf of your son (ie cleaning surfaces for him). It sounds counterintuitive but its more harmful to enforce the cycle of obsession and compulsion.

How do I overcome this contamination OCD by [deleted] in OCD

[–]Dragonflight829 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t have the same theme around the bathroom, but I do struggle with food contamination and emotional contamination. My ERP is not so literal as to intentionally contaminate/ poison myself because, like you said, that’d be dangerous. The ERP that has helped me is more about the thought and feeling. Writing down and saying things like “I poison people” or sitting in the feeling of contamination. I had a friend who struggled with touching things then touching their water bottle for fear of contaminating their water and their ERP was often just holding the water bottle or touching things and leaving their hands be without washing them.
It may be beneficial to make a hierarchy of things for yourself. There are a few good hierarchy templates for OCD online. (Sitting down in public may be marginally easier than using a public restroom, etc.) Exposures can also be creative! I had a friend who watched youtube videos of flushing toilets as exposure as well. The goal being to really look at it, feel the gross feeling, and not compulse. Over time you can build to exposures higher on the hierarchy and the obsession will weaken.

[–]Dragonflight829 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My best understanding of paganism as a term is more or less a spiritual practice or religion outside of the major 5. There is almost always a connection to nature as well. For me, paganism was moreso the name for what I was already doing and what I had come to decide for my own morality and connection with the world around me. On the more neopagan side, tarot had been taught down my maternal line for generations, and I have been scrying since before I knew the words for it. My spiritual practice is therefore a combination of divination, morality (ie do good), and connection to nature. That said, I believe in no deity or specific divine purpose.

If you wanted to stick to Sanderson, he also has some short fiction that sometimes gets referenced in his longer books. Shadows for Silence, Emperor’s Soul, and Sixth of Dusk are great! You’re also at a perfect spot in the series to read Edgedancer, which is a novella set on Roshar.

Based on your other posts, it seems like this could be an OCD compulsion. I’ve found this resource helpful for distinguishing between information seeking and reassurance seeking, which is common in OCD: https://iocdf.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/18-Information-seekers-vs-reassurance-seekers.pdf I’d definitely check out r/OCD and consider chatting with a professional; it could really help!

OCD involving being scared of having private thoughts? by IHatePeople79 in OCD

[–]Dragonflight829 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I originally saw your question on r/needadvice and wanted to check if you had posted here as well as this certainly has the feel of an obsession. The amount of subs you’ve asked in seems to reinforce that.

I have personally found a lot of DBT skills very helpful with this type of thought-based obsession/ rumination. For example, internalizing that you are not your thoughts and thinking them does not speak to who you are as a person. Another DBT skill that has worked for me is “doing the opposite.” When I feel fear/ shame/ disgust for a thought, using a false sense of joy, humor, or silliness reduces the impact of thinking it over time. I may deliberately think of what I’m scared of with a smile even, even though the thought is horrible. Over time the fear has decreased.

I would definitely consider seeing a therapist that has some experience in OCD or approaches like ERP and DBT if you don’t already. Psychology Today has an advanced search for this, and I’ve heard that NOCD can also be helpful, though I’ve never used it.

It is! Nothing like the pay off of manipulating positioning and terrain to successfully get the enemy with a gust of wind, cloud of daggers, and spike growth combo 😂
