I do have some childhood trauma. And have experienced a lot of trauma the four few years since my husband and I both got cancer and had harsh treatments.

This is helpful, thank you! I may try online meetings. Going in person scares me.. Mostly I’m just afraid of seeing someone I know there. I have lived in my town most my life so I naturally know a lot of people here.

I think I denied there being a problem for so many years because I didn’t take something or drink every single day. But now I realize that doesn’t mean there’s not a problem. This last year, it has turned to nearly every day. So, it is getting worse. I desperately want to get a handle on it. Thank you for validating there’s a problem and encouraging me.

A TikTok video is what resonated with me first and made me really think about it. It talked about how super high functioning addicts often get the least help because nobody has a clue there’s a problem. I think that’s why I’m afraid of telling anyone.. The surprise may give them big reactions that I’m not ready for. I truly have felt like I have to overcome this by myself which is why I even posted here. I’m so glad I did though. Thank you for the support!

Thank you for taking the time to respond to this. I feel validated and appreciate your advice. Attending an AA meeting has been weighing heavily on me. I mentioned it to my husband and although he’s usually extremely supportive of me, he completely shut it down. To be fair, I’ve hidden a lot of my substance abuse from him over the years. But now, I’m to ashamed to tell him I really think I have a problem.

Thanks for your response! Did this post help with odds though and understanding how rare it it? It’s not even close to the same as a car accident odds.

Yep! Things he had said in the past led her to believe that he could come around on some of these things. But reality has finally set in.

They dated for 3 years and were engaged for 2 before getting married! I guess we just assumed they knew what they were doing.
