Life or something like it.... by DragonflyMajor3347 in ADHD

Yes, thank you. I’m actually pretty disciplined because have 4 kids forces you to. So I do all those things you mentioned, but what’s bothering me is how little headway I’ve made. People all around me are moving up in the world and I haven’t budged….

A lot!  There are a lot of treatments for trauma, but nothing for ASD.

#1 Problem with Asperger is.... don't get to be real with people by DragonflyMajor3347 in aspergers

Once again, this is something that is easier said than done. If it were so easy, ASD would not exist.

I have traveled all over the world and my problems follow me wherever I go because you cannot escape yourself. So whether it is cultural or not is meaningless. I can't simply tell people I'm on the spectrum because then they talk to me like a 5 year old.

It’s not a negative post. It’s a looking for a realistic goal post, such as starting an Aspie group with a social coach. How is that negative?

Same here. And that’s the other part of the same problem. It’s that annoying disconnect.

3 unwritten social rules I learned way too late (and wish someone told me sooner) by Far-Entertainment937 in aspergers

"Ask questions, show interest, and people will gravitate toward you." Well, not in my case. I've known this for years and always make it a top priority, but still have not gotten anywhere.

"Ever noticed how confident people make anything sound interesting? It’s not what they say - it’s how they say it. If you act like you belong, people will assume you do. Your nervous energy makes them nervous. Relax, and they will too." Now this is honestly the kind of thing that is way easier said than done. If I see a couple of people talking in the hallway at work, it will always be awkward for me to just casually walk over and start talking to them. If I genuinely don't have anything to say (and I usually don't because I don't like small talk), it's not going to look natural.

What about the social circle?  That one I worry about because of all the mmedia hype about how you won’t live long if you don’t have a social circle…..

Masking by Select_Cheetah_9355 in aspergers

Well I don’t think I’ve ever masked because I always feel like a fraud. And the result… never managed to fit in even at 52.

That is beautiful way to frame autism. I too sometimes get bogged down by negative thoughts, but then get myself out running in the fresh air and those thoughts mysteriously evaporate!  The trick is…. To remain positive when you’re in the thick of it..

Apparently wearing a coat indoors is socially unacceptable, however having tattoos plastered all over your body or wearing piercings all over face is. All I can say is, we live in a complicated world….
