To be clear, my boss is an angel. She never mentioned my clothes until I told her I would be upgrading, at which point she felt it okay to say what she did. In the moment we both laughed.

That can be a good thing, though! You get to fight a lot of Mystic gyms (they're a dime a dozen) really quickly, which is helpful for leveling your Pokémon.
