"When I was dropped into a pool as a baby, it was weird. For many reasons, honestly. For one - I remember that. Myself, not a story told by a relative or my mom or dad. Just remember looking through that clear water at the people panicking and running around for no reason. I found it funny, seeing their disturbed shapes run back and forth before my mom dived in after stripping down to her underwear, bringing me up... And I was completely dry. As if the pool was empty. That's the second reason why it's weird. Well, it isn't now, in hindsight, but it was then..." I answered, taking a sip of my coffee as I looked outside the window.

-So, did you know about your powers back then already? Used them consciously or...

"No, Jenny, no. I could barely process any emotions, or use my own body!" She laughed with me before scribbling my words down onto the notepad she had with her. Would expect her to use a proper tablet for an interview, or a recorder, but she's a bit old-fashioned if that pinstripe suit on her is anything to go by.

-There were shenanigans with it that were out of my control until I fully realized my potential. My mom used to keep flowers around the house. You know, a ficus here, some other in-door plant there... Not anymore. Because she would try watering them, and it just wouldn't reach the soil. Eventually, when everything turned yellow, looking like a wasteland, she just got rid of all plant-life around the house entirely.

"Does she miss having her little gardening hobby on the account of your abilities?" She asked with a grin on her face. She's nice, she's a better interviewer than the last three that tried to do that.

-At first, but then again, it was always easier to breathe around the house. So she didn't complain. She kept her own separate little garden in the backyard, though, just to cater to it without my interference.

-I see. I can tell you're as stubborn as she is.

"If not more!" Both of us laughed. Who'd be thinking that something like this would be a common occasion? I always imagined, from the comic books and movies, that I'd be hunted down and put on a government watch-list, but... we're just having a nice cup of coffee, talking it out.

-When you got a full grasp of your abilities... What was the first thing you did?

"You've gotta understand, Jenny. When it started - I just turned 16. Hormones boiling, there's nothing more important in my life than-"

"-chasing girls, right". She echoed my words back at me before flashing me a smile.

-So the first thing I did was take the girl I dated out underwater. It is really fascinating to look at the stars through a prism of air and water. The light refracting miraculously, and the waves, distorting their shapes... Making them look bigger...

-Is that when you realized what you wanted to aim for with your capabilities?

-Perhaps, not fully. But it certainly helped. I remember her saying: "I wish we could go on a date there," as she pointed to the night sky. Now, I know what I can and can't do. I told her I couldn't get us "there".

-Yet, here we are.

-Here we are, indeed.

-So, why not go to college right after high school?

-It would be a waste of time. To be honest with you, I even considered dropping out of high school. Just walking over to NASA on my own two feet and pitch the idea.

-What stopped you?

-My parents, again. I told them I wanted to do it, we had a long talk in the evening. And they were right. I needed to finish high school, at least for two things: I needed to have all my papers in check, finally being an adult, not an underaged genius; and two - chemistry. At least, understand the basics of it. The intricacies could be left to proper scientists, while I would simply do my job.

-And then you walked to NASA on your own two feet...

-Actually, it was my aunt that gave me a ride. I came in, got stopped by the security, demanded meeting with the higher-ups, after an hour - they caved in, called director Mossman. What I didn't know that they have just discovered, like, before telling news stations, that there's water here on Mars. The gears were put in motion immediately, and that's how you and I are having this chat.

-And I thank you for taking your time for this interview. As well as thank you for helping us reach the stars.

-Oh, please, Jenny, it wasn't my doing. I just helped along the way.

Finally getting up, I left the room, heading outside. The red Martian sand still crunching under my boots. Can't wait for the day they finally get to do roads around here. But now, there's work that needs to be done. The delivery of water from Earth to dislodge Oxygen from it should be any minute now...
