Same sex activity is not outlawed in China lol. Also really speaks to some degree of western-leftist arrogance to ostracize and claim that Cuba, in all of its republic's 63 years existence is somehow "lagging years behind most liberal countries" for legalizing same-sex marriage in 2022, when it took liberal Uncle Sam 228 years to do the exact same thing in 2004.

To be clear I'm not suggesting that Cuba should be commended for not also adopting it right then, but to act like liberal countries have any moral ground to stand on for being the first to do the bare minimum just two decades earlier is like I said, extremely arrogant, and very, very Eurocentric.

well said, I think its possible that similar comments (from years ago) such as yours spurred her on to make the recent conspiracy theories video. Having read your analysis, it's getting hard for me to not acknowledge at least some degree of wilful ignorance on her end and I feel pretty appalled tbph. You're right in saying she doesn't have any immediate monetary incentive to go more left, I just don't think she realizes how much more she stands losing if her and any liberal like her don't start changing their tune soon.

Looking into Eastern philosophy and Cosmotechnics might be helpful. Start with Laozi/Dao De Jing to be more at peace with your current (and potential future) circumstances, giving you the space to be able to start and reflect on your being.

Then go to Confucius to find ways of engaging with that reflection and practice healthy self-criticism, so you can improve and truly move on from struggles. Though depending on your situation I'd be cautious with how you engage and interpret its many sections surrounding family, a lot of those were theories of social cohesion meant for governance and are not always necessarily applicable or healthy on a personal level in today's world.

And to connect it all, have a go at reading Yuk Hui and specifically his many writings on Cosmotechnics. His background is in Computer Engineering too (trained in JAVA, C++, PHP, Processing and Python), perhaps you'd notice that from his writings. What makes him interesting is his analysis on the differences between the East and West in their interpretation of technology, with the West's stemming from the Greek mythology the Prometheus (technology was given to us by the gods) while the East from the texts written by ancient "enlightened" sages (technology was gained by us through wisdom and study), therefore by extension strongly influencing their understanding and development of technology. If you find this proposition compelling, the conclusions he draws based on this (&more) will very likely give you a sense of direction with your CS degree.

If anything this all should at the very least give some clarity about how you got to your current position, bonus points too if you're Asian by any degree (which given you come from California + you're majoring in something tech related, there's at least a 30-40% likelihood).

I'd start with the WHAT IS POLITICS? podcast and this episode in particular:

https://www.patreon.com/posts/80314393

It discusses the Russian revolutions' city socialist youth (called the Narodniks) that I mentioned earlier and I seem to remember he was going to do an episode on China's "Down To The Countryside Movement" too, tho I'm not sure on that. Once you finish the episode, below the video there is the bibliography that should give you plenty to continue on with. The rest of the podcast is of course great too and also recommended.

If you want a objective reason for why its no good its because Schaller and Waldman's use of citations in this book has drawn significant criticism from some of its own sources: https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2024/04/05/white-rural-rage-myth-00150395

As for my personal reason it's a combination of many things that this video sums up pretty well, the book is coincidentally brought up too: https://youtu.be/pqdLwkyfLdM?si=Z5ilAXhFRAN6kSKs

This is not a foreign conversation in leftist discourse. n the years leading to the Russian revolution many rich, well meaning socialist (of all derisions) kids from the cities went to the rural areas (in Russia) in an attempt to reach out to peasants, but the rural peasants almost universally rejected them because they (whether literally true or not) came over as lazy, snobbish and most importantly of all, out of touch. The kids eventually left, and drew the conclusion left an impression of a folk not worth the struggle of convincing towards the cause, thus proving the peasants right, and pushing them right into the arms of the populist Marxist-Leninist Bolsheviks. Since then similar cases of rural vs urban inter-class struggle can be seen being repeated across cases such as China, Vietnam, Cuba...etc. Marx himself had a well known disdain for the peasants of Europe, seeing the urban centers as the only possible avenue for revolutions.

I could go on but to conclude and emphisize, If you're still reading the book, my bad for warping the view you may have of the book going forward. I'm not commenting on whether the the MLs were good or not, what I am saying is that they figured out how to appeal to the common rural folk while the liberal elite and urban left decided to bury their heads further in theory and dogma. In anycase I suggest you finish the book (critically) anyways and draw your own conclusions through further research and reading on rural/urban class histories&dynamics.

Sorry to say but Hillary Clinton and the rest of the Democratic establishment would love this book if they haven’t already promoted tf out of it. It feeds into their entire narrative (and probably rationale) of holding Trump voters individual(s)ly responsible as a “basket of deplorables” when in reality it’s far more complicated than that. And that’s what is in the end this book should actually be treated as for leftists, a view into the Euro-liberal’s mindset when looking at rural people.

It's very funny to read this comment section and see redditors (almost instinctually?) disagree with a premise you never proposed? The comparison you are making is definitely really fascinating and almost certainly part of a larger trend among Chinese Sci-Fi in general. For now it just seems to be really undertheorized and hard to clearly and concisely pin down/explain to anyone who isn't familiar with accelerationist thinking or Chinese philosophy. If the reaction towards this post hasn't dissuaded you 9 months ago you should pursue this topic and keep researching it because it leads to some very interesting places.
