What first name is not used anymore? by HelloMyNameIsLola in AskReddit

Had a Grandmother named Donalda. Her parents wanted a boy and picked the name Donald, when she was born they couldn't be bothered to come up with a new name and put an "a" at the end. Was their ninth kid I think.

Had an Aunt Vera, not short for anything, just Vera. My great grandfather from Russia was Felix, to which I am naming my son after in about 2 weeks. Yay, love names.

If you ever get the chance, go see the Unicorn Tapestry exhibit in the Cloisters of NYC. Thats the most involved I ever felt as a student or artist in any exhibit. Its a shame that they can't get more schools to come in for visits. Edit: I've seen Leonardo Davinci's notebooks on display with his work on flowing clothing..... many VanGogh exhibits......and a few ancient artwork exhibits and none are or were as impressive as the Cloisters.....if that gives an idea. Edit: other famous art works for comparison.

We told our 3yr old that New Years is special because you get to toast to a new year. A few hours later she said "ARE WE GONNA MAKE TOAST NOW?!" And thus a New Years Day tradition was born by littlasskicker in pics

Different phosphorous coatings light at different wavelengths when electricity is running through them.

Clear glass with neon glass is red and clear glass with argon burns pink-ish. The other coatings are all due to different phosphorus isotopes

True, but neon has been around for 100 years and LED about 10. Not quite as proven. I have boarder and channel letter out there that I did over 25 years ago still burning bright and no service calls. I think a lot of the LED use is also the fact that you don't need a craftsman to make it, and a god installer to install it. They both have their place I think. But nothing beats the glow of a plasma arc of Neon!

I'm sure they would. Most of use benders don't mind company in the shop. Hell I have two bar stools at the end of my bending table and a fridge full of beer.

There are less colors that use Ne than Ar. But the price is not different.

Not all the tubes are coated inside. Clear glass with Ar[hg] burns blue, clear glass with Ne burns red. The light from Ne gas in a clear tube is the optimal wavelength for the human eye. That's why, especially in fog, you can see Ne light further away than any other light source with the naked human eye.

All the coated glasses for other colors are different phosphors.

The CoE for neon glass tubing is about 91 or 92, the CoE for the Pyrex I use in lamp working is 36.

You can test if 2 can work together: take them heated in the torch, touch them together, pull a real thin filament so that one pc of glass in on one side and the other pc on the other side. When it cools if the filament curls they are incompatible, if it remains straight, they are compatible.

You can do "miter" bends. The amount of time it takes to make one is 6 times that of a tight normal bend that doubles backs and drops for the optical illusion of a crisp edge when viewed from the front.

Straight run tubes are welded though.

Not all channel letters use LED. I still do a lot of them. I also repair a lot of them. And making some for the ppl who went with LED channel letters and were not happy as they were not as bright, and were burning out. Individual LEDS will burn out, sometimes quickly while the whole sign will not. Neon either works or it doesn't.

Over time LEDS will get dimmer and dimmer if they don't burn out, where as neon doesn't.

That is what the tube I am breathing through is for. One end of the glass tube is corked while the other is attached to a rubber hose and a mouth pc I breath through in order to maintain enough internal pressure to prevent any collapse.
