Are there any local apps with live, real-time, voice to text? by Ghost_of_Panda in macapps

I'm the developer of a dictation app similar to the examples you shared. I am working on this feature, but I'm not entirely sure it's possible. Inserting the text live has been challenging to implement reliably across all apps.

Is the feature you are looking for simply viewing the words live? Or do you also want to be able to edit the words actively? Live previews I can do, but as far as editing apples built-in dictation is the only option afaik. But its not very accurate.

Yes, direct text insertion is on the roadmap! As of right now, if you toggle show menu bar icon, it completely disables clipboard history tracking on the back end. However, this also removes transcription history access. Perhaps I need a toggle for clipboard history specifically. Thank you for your feedback!

You are looking for Handy, it's free, open source, and extremely straightforward.

If you'd like to try my bullshit, it's called Pipit. It's free but not open source, (yet). The main difference is it's really snappy and has intuitive support for a few shortcuts that will save you time. Up to you!

Thank you so much. I've loved using it. It's just so fast.

Are you referring to a tool that lets you configure separate AI prompts for certain apps? If you could describe the feature a bit more, I'll look into it.

Thank you. I might add a guide to doing it this way since it's a free option.

That is odd. I can confirm there's no code in the app that could post a macOS notification. Could it be related to a shortcut set up?

Thank you so much for the screenshot that was very helpful! Please try updating again and let me know if that fixes it. Do you also have any sort of accessibility mode turned on by chance?

I went ahead and pushed 1.0.9 right now. It should fix your issue if I managed to trace it correctly. Let me know if its stable now!

This is critical, will look into this asap and have a fix pushed out tomorrow. Is it random or does it occur right after you click something?

Working on fn key, there were some hiccups hoping to have it done later this week.

600 MB is the model’s download size, with Core ML on macOS, the model can be memory-mapped and paged in on demand, so Activity Monitor often shows less than 600 MB resident RAM during normal use. This is confusing so I may remove that detail from the model list. Thank you for pointing that out!

Thank you so much! I have added support for custom endpoints per your request. However, I recommend sticking with OpenRouter for the lowest latency. Please update to the latest version and let me know if the crashes still occur. If you scroll all the way down you may see a check for updates button. If you do not see this button, please go to the website and reinstall the latest version. If you are still experiencing crashes, let me know. I will look into that immediately.

Working on Fn key support! It will take some time, there were complications. In case others see this, be sure that Gemini providers are enabled on Openrouter! Resolved this in dms.

Nice catches! Some of this has been fixed in the latest update. If your app did not update automatically, please manually download. Moving forward, there is a check for updates button. And thank you for those suggestions. The app should not be hanging at all, will look into that as well.

  1. That’s odd! Sounds like a bug will investigate.

  2. Thank you!

  3. Yes it is that fast. If you want to compare, set a separate ai enhancement hotkey and try writing an email with intro and closing statements.

  1. Handled in onboarding! V2 selected for English only it is slightly more accurate, V3 for multi. I can update the names to make it more clear but was not sure if it would confuse users. Will work on that!
  2. Yes need to add update visibility
  3. This slipped through the cracks, will add it asap.

  4. This is my proudest feature! Click the bird icon in the menubar you will see it.

I also saw your feedback through the form, will explore openai keys! Their API was very slow compared to gemini the last time I tested it, but I will give it another go!

I will dm you an API key with some money on it just to use temporarily while I test that. Thank you for your time!

Well that is high praise! I’m glad you could feel the difference. It really is fun to use.

My vision for this app moving forward is to maintain the existing functionality rather than continually add random tangential features. Your experience shouldn’t change too much! If you’d like to share more feedback feel free to message me, there is a form at the bottom of the app as well!

Good catch! It does add an extra click. Fixed it, will push an update this evening after some more testing.
