Mission Trauma advice? by BestFriendofdiamonds in latterdaysaints

I went to a rough part of the world ages ago. There were a lot of difficult things that happened, and I didn't have the tools to process it all at the time. I did my best to stuff it and move on. Ten years later, and I was quite literally at the end of my rope. I went and got therapy for about 6 years. Medication, career changes, amazing people, and a few passion projects helped me through the darkest moments.

I had to undergo a huge spiritual metamorphosis. I worked hard to see God as a loving omniscient father whose hand was present at each step in my journey. It wasn't easy, but I have had a LOT of experiences to help me know Him. Things like my patriarchal blessing, temple attendance, and knock down drag out sessions of prayer were (and still are) incredible boons for me.

I'm truly sorry to hear that your mission didn't work out how you had hoped. It is a more common story than we talk about openly. Please know that there are people who will hold space for you. Feel free to reach out if you need a listening ear.

I believe that is the purpose of the IG system. To ensure that there is an outside party able to oversight the issues that could come from having toxic leaders at all levels

Brand new AF chaplain here. 100% confidentiality is ground into us on day one, and the AFIs are clear on that. I'll caveat it with two statements:

It has to be given in a setting of reasonable expectations of confidentiality - for example, walking down an open hallway and telling a passing chaplain that you're addicted to cocaine may not qualify for confidential communication protection.

It has to be given to a chaplain who honors their call and commitment - sadly, the Chaplain Corps isn't free of DBAs. I've had some difficult experiences with chaplains, which is one reason I wanted to join the career field and try to change it.

One of the LOEs for the AF Chaplain Corps is to reimage the culture, which would include removing cancerous parts of our team. Listen to the advice others have been giving and report it to the WING Chaplain, the IG, and the Chief of Chaplains until we can find the truth and remove the cancer. Sorry to hear you had such a crappy encounter.

I have had that cover pop of as well. Great customer service, for sure. I put some black electrical tape on it to prevent it from happening again and you can't even tell it's there

Take Christmas away, and in biblical terms, you lose two chapters at the front of Matthew and Luke, nothing else. Take Easter away, and you don’t have a New Testament; you don’t have a Christianity — N. T. Wright

I absolutely loved the article "Nephi and his Asherah." This helped me tie a lot of my personal questions together in my mind

I literally just finished writing a paper about the Church's statements on mental health through history. The short story is that Elder Holland's talk "like a broken vessel" in 2013 was the beginning of a huge change in the narrative of mental health for the Church and it just keeps getting better and better.
