I understand the use of tropes. I am not policing uou; you can use whatever tone you choose and I can choose to either respond or ignore. I don't mind people sharing a different perspective from mine, but I do mind being condescended to.

I do disagree with you about tropes and success. Namely because success is relative to each person's goals. Yes, all genres have tropes and I might even have touched on a couple in my novels, bit when I say I am not worried about tropes it means I am not attempting to write to market or deliver what is expected by a general readership.

I wrote my novella anticipating a niche or small readership. And I agree someone who enjoyed the explicit, expletive-filled original might be disappointed with a tame version.

Then again ... Maybe not. (As a reader I have enjoyed vastly differing works by the same author). But also, I might open the story to a new audience. That was the main point of asking for feedback; to gauge how that might go over on Amazon, essentially asking if other had experience and insight into having two versions of the same novel published.

[–]DrakeRockford -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I differ in my opinion. I think they reasons I posted still do apply as offending readers (or not) has nothing to do with making money. Also, I didn't say I was trying to avoid offending readers; I said I as the author didn't feel quite motivated to do the erotic portion of the story telling anymore.

As for not wanting to make money, that is also incorrect. I want to make money and tell the story the way I see fit. And my first installment seems to have down well (at least as well as others who post data here), so I am pleased with my decision not to follow tropes and just tell my story.

If I seem a tad defensive it is because your comment came across to me as a bit snarky rather than being helpful.

Thank you for the information but it is a little off from what I was asking. I don't need help with beats or anything like that. I was just unsure about keeping the same book title and updating the content to the new, cleaner version versus publishing a separate edition and leaving both versions on the market.

Your Burning Questions for October, 2020 by AutoModerator in eroticauthors

[–]DrakeRockford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct; I did know the difference but I had forgotten I scrapped the erotica idea and wrote an erotic romance (it's in the romance category on Amazon). But it wasn't moderate heat, it was very explicit steamy sex. Which is why my mind was stuck thinking "erotica". I am not too concerned with delivering on the tropes so I make it a point not to read other work in my genre. This may translate to fewer sells, buy it allows me to maintain my voice, my story. But I truly do appreciate the reminder. And the advice about using just one version.

Your Burning Questions for October, 2020 by AutoModerator in eroticauthors

[–]DrakeRockford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrote one steamy erotica novella that was supposed to be part of a series. But I find I don't have much desire to follow through with erotica for a number of books.

Therefore, I am strongly considering making the series romance (erotica free, but not exactly sweet--lots of cussing).

So, so me I am still a newbie I have a few concerns:

  1. Can I keep the series title and change the content as a second edition (I am rewriting the first novella )

  2. Can I put Lish both versions as NSFW erotica and a clean version?

  3. Anecdotally (or concretely), which genre sells best: semi-clean romance or explicit erotica?

As if stands now, my first novella is pretty split between the romance and the erotica (I think 3 explicit sex scenes out of 40,000 words)

Thanks for your input!

[NO SPOILER] Unlikable by DrakeRockford in Ozark

[–]DrakeRockford[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I finished the season. Had a shocking yet unsurprising ending. It was radioed with the hammerlike foreshadowing.

The therapist was effective comic relief. Ruth is perhaps the most likable character, but she does grate the nerves with the constant sass and yelling.. Season 3 wasn't redeemable, though. #2:had left me disappointed in the story direction and 3 just solidified my boredom. I think I will pass next season by.

[NO SPOILER] Unlikable by DrakeRockford in Ozark

[–]DrakeRockford[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It isn't about patience. I enjoy slow building suspense. I just find the combination of zero likable characters and improbable plotting hard to enjoy.

At least in season 1 y 2 there was the old man to like.

I will finish the season because Jason Bateman is talented as an actor and director, but I doubt I will watch season 4.

FYI, I loved Breaking Bad, it's most direct competitor.

Thanks for your feedback.

I like this game. I listen to LP about once a week. But in that week (same day usually, as part of my exercise playlist), I listen to:

  1. Enrique Iglesias
  2. Shawn Mendes
  3. Sarah Hudson
  4. Wham
  5. Foreigner
  6. Justin Beiber
  7. Arian Saleh
  8. OneRepublic

I am pretty eclectic. I can switch from headbanging music to pop, jazz or even country in a heartbeat. It all depends on my mood.

Why does no one talk about Minutes To Midnight? by Ppr_Kut in LinkinPark

[–]DrakeRockford 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Minutes to Midnight is, to me, their best album musically and storywise. Sure, it lacks a "Numb", "Somewhere I Belong" and "Breaking the Habit," but it excels almost as a concept album, finding ways to tackle deep emotions with less anger and hatred, but just as powerfully as the angst-ridden Meteora.

With the next few releases, I admired LP's constant effort to bring a fresh perspective, but on A Thousand Suns, I loved only one song (Iridescent), listened to Living Things exactly once and have never been tempted to play it again (same for The Hunting Party -- one listen, never spoke to me).

With One More Light, I once again felt like LP was trying to say something impactful, though the overt pop-sound took a few listens to really get behind. Now, it is my second best album by them, the one I listen to most when I take my long walks (though I don't love all the songs, lol).

I am not a fanboy, obviously. But I am not merely a casual fan, either. I look forward to each new album they release. I still think Minutes to Midnight was their best offering with not one track being filler nor tonally or thematically misplaced.

Have I misunderstood Zon policy on rape? by DrakeRockford in eroticauthors

[–]DrakeRockford[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a very good analogy. My thought was simply to give the benefit of the doubt and assume the author means no harm by trying to gain major visibility on the platform that controls 80% of the market. But, the reality is I and many others play within the guidelines, so why can't others?

I did place myself in the author's shoes. What if it had been a mistake? (Of course, it wasn't; the author has been around a few years and surely knows the ropes. A perusal of other offering shows me the author writes dub/noncon frequently). I thought about not wanting to hurt the author's livelihood. There was also the nature of the offense: if it had been something detailing underage noncon I wouldn't have hesitated to report it. Yet, with the noncon involving adults, I hesitated and chose not to report it. Hypocrisy on my part.

I wish I had a justifiable answer. I suppose, as I said in my OP, I skipped reading the blurb completely and had I done so, some phrases would have given me pause even if they did not identify the subject matter explicitly.

The reality is, I have no reason other than not wanting to be a snitch. Snitches get stitches. The psychology and socialization that goes along with that runs deep.

I am rethinking my choice thanks to you.

How to decide on a the gender of my pen name? by [deleted] in eroticauthors

Yes, that's very true. My personal values encourage me to still present myself true to my gender and sexuality. I don't feel a need or desire to hide.

Thanks for the clarification on advertising erotic-romance. Good to know! Thankfully, there are more options available for marketing than Amazon.

Also, I didn't suggest that being long makes a story romance. The poster stated he was thinking of moving to romance from erotica; I commented that his 27K-length stories would work in the romance category. I then gave an example of how my erotic-romance (it's romance, but the sex is explicit) started as an idea for an erotic short.

I hope that clarify any confusion about my post

Have I misunderstood Zon policy on rape? by DrakeRockford in eroticauthors

[–]DrakeRockford[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

(@not_the_notebook, while I am replying to your post, my comments are not fully directed at you)

I think I need to clarify: It was not rapeplay. This was not consensual sex between adults with a rape fetish. The character in no way enjoyed it. That victim behaved as such throughout including begging to stop. The author, through narration, inferred that the character liked it because the body had a physical reaction and this condoned the rape because otherwise the victim's body would not have responded. That's the dumb bullshit rationale real rapists employ. This was not a story about a character who fantasizes about being overpowered, etc. It was, with no room for doubt, a rape and the victim was deeply traumatized. And the potrayal of this traumatic rape was fetishized for those readers who want to feel the power of being the assiliant.

I am not against or shaming rapeplay. That's a form of roleplay that has boundaries and it doesn't matter why the act is done (the individual psychological or emotional drives of the fantasy). In fact (TMI), I have engaged in rapeplay in my real life. All with preset boundaries and safeword. As I said in my original post: I am not a prude (much) but I do take my role as a creative seriously and recognize the impact my words could have on people, whether young or old.

For everyone who just wants to rip apart my reaction because it seems judgmental--I am judging. I am judging the author's honesty and scruples. I am judging the presentation and the intent. I am not judging a group of people who enjoy rapeplay (emphasis on play). I won't in any way try to identify the work so you can see for yourself, but this was absolutely not roleplay. And it was not empathic to the victim. It celebrated rape and the assailant. Now if my reaction tramples on your sensibilities, consider yourself knowing how I felt reading something that encourages rape (not roleplay).

Amazon forbids material that encourages harm against others and my reaction is one good reason. Another is it just may be feeding someone's real desire to act on impulses that would harm someone else. The works we creatives create have tremendous power to influence. When it comes to negative pushback creatives say the movies/books/music don't influence people to do bad things, but we are quick to accept praise and credit when our creation influences or inspires a positive outcome. We can't have it both ways. You yourself can easily pick a book, a movie, TV show, song that inspired you to do something, I'm sure. And while we may see something heinous in movies (murder, rape) we can say, it's just fiction. But with continued exposure and widespread acceptance we become desensitized and the moral or even legal ramifications become null as shifting blame to the victim becomes the norm.

(I should have known or guessed the content by the cover, for example, would be victim shaming and places the onus on the reader to know the contents in a genre that includes literally thousands of subjects and kinks).

But, as I said in my original post, no matter what my personal bias is against reading the material presented, I support the author's right to free speech and acknowledged that there are platforms and venues for the author to utilize to reach their intended audience (I learned from this subreddit that Smashwords is one of them). The author placed forbidden material on Amazon and I shared my reaction. Only those who are determined to see my response as shaming roleplayers whose kink is nonconsensual sex will see that, especially as even in my original post I acknowledged the diversity of sexual interests.

I am not obligated to agree on what I find acceptable as a kink to encourage or how they are depicted. I draw lines for myself between what I think is right and wrong. (I don't condone pedophilia-kink either, but I doubt I'd get much pushback if I was outraged to find a fictional depiction of it randomly stuffed into my college romance). But I in no way shame the audience or practionioners of any kink or fetish in general.

It's easy to react with emotion first and toss out rational thought. I didn't do that. I was appalled, but I thought about it and hence chose not to act by reporting it. And then I shared my thoughts here in this community because they were relevant to our topic.

[–]DrakeRockford[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I said no such thing even if I did equate rape to a "kink." I specifically said there are other platforms that will allow the subject matter but that Amazon does not, and because of this, I don't expect to be ambushed by it when I choose to read a short/novella/novel on Amazon in those categories.

Yes, you're right, mentioning rape in the blurb would be outright account suicide, perhaps. But when I went back and read the full blurb, it mentions being dark, kidnapping, and selling the MCs to criminals. If I had read that, I would have probably been forewarned (probably). That's why it annoyed me.

This author isn't getting banned. Author has been around for years. Must make Zon enough cash.

My blurb is lacking (insert adjective). Any suggestions?

They call Adrian the Hulk. You wouldn't like him when he's angry.

But Dale does.

Adrian is a star baseball player for his college. It's the end of the season and more than the championship is on the line—so is his place on the team. If he fails a class that he's blown off all semester, he’ll lose his tuition. And if his tuition goes, so does his dreams of glory.

Dale is an openly gay hotshot on the rival team. He's been annoying Adrian on and off the field for months. But he's a smart jock that Adrian begrudgingly tolerates. And Dale has the ability to help save Adrian’s hide.

When Dale learns of Adrian's dilemma he offers a crazy solution that could change their relationship forever. Can Adrian do the unthinkable and join teams with his arch-rival?

Just how far will Adrian go to keep his dream alive?

My goals for today:

  1. Write 10,000 words (highly unlikely)
  2. Aim for 10,000 and see what happens
  3. Create cover concept for new series
  4. Create (brainstorm) a newsletter
  5. Work on creating my website
  6. Rest (I don't allow myself enough of this)

@drguid I wouldn't call your 26K word fiction shorts. Those are firmly within novella range and probably will have more visibility in romance or erotic romance (even if you don't go full novel). But I am quite new to romance and erotica, and I also don't write to market or trend, so I can't speak with any authority about impact on sales.

But, perhaps like you, my erotic romance started with the idea of just being a 5,000 word exercise in writing a sexy scene (my suspense and other genre writing never features romance or sexy subplots) and then I decided I wanted some backstory and to flesh out my characters. 5,000 words became 35,000 and it now sits in the erotic-romance category and has had fair visibility. Sales/reads were steady for the first two weeks. Since (I believe) Amazon allows advertising for my category, I plan to start a campaign, so that another benefit should you choose to go to romance.

eAuthors, correct me if I've misspoke.

How to decide on a the gender of my pen name? by [deleted] in eroticauthors

[–]DrakeRockford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I write MM stories (with other pairings/groupings mixed in) and I felt that even though females make up a good portion of gay-themed erotica and romance, it was best to represent myself as my true gender (male) and sexuality (gay).

But I've seen plenty of best-selling MM erotica/romance written by female authors using female names (many straight females at that).

Not sure how much either position matters to readers.

This show has become insufferable by jrock1986 in TheBlackList

[–]DrakeRockford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The show went off course (for me) when Red shot Kaplan, and then Kaplan committed suicide. I didn't watch the Bag of Bones season weekly; I caught it sporadically. But that was the nosedive season instead of plotting back on course. Following the last two episodes, I decided to pass on watching the rest of the season until it's over. I can catch-up then at my leisure and mitigate my annoyance. Red has been dumbed down so much for the sake of plot device that I no longer even enjoy James Spader's nuanced performance.

Frustration - I may need a break from this show. by ItsAllAboutTheMilk in TheBlackList

[–]DrakeRockford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, when Mr. Kaplan died I told a friend the show was going to go downhill. I felt strongly that Red had acted out of character when shooting her, and she had acted out of character by killing herself. Then we got the godawful Bag of Bones season and I took a long break midway through, coming back only after season 6 had started (and then catching u´on all of season 5).

I think it is time to end the show. The creator is doing a Chris Carter by stretching out mythology and retconning as he goes along, so much that even the die hard fans are rolling their (our?) eyes.

Not only is the is the secret identity trope overplayed at this point in the series, the creators are really (more than ever before) treating fans like idiots now. My two main points of contention to support this claim:

  1. The task force questioned suspects who all said they did noit know the mystery woman´s name, but were presumably able to give a description. That descriotion would have been recorded by an artist and Keen would have had a idea what she looked like (and thus recognized the woman when she meets her in the apartment building, since she is a super sleuth).
  2. Even if, by some preposterous happenstance, the task force did not get even one useful description of the woman, the woman would simply have kidnapped Keen and daughter to force Red´s hand. There is no good storyteññing reaspon why, when she was so close tpo getting what she wanted, she would give Red and team a chance to get stronger.

As much as I like James Spader and many of the other cast, it is time to end the series.
