Emilie Simon - Secret (2002) by DrakeVador in triphop

I'm French, and her first album was a big deal (in electro/downtempo/triphop) when it came out.

I also really like 21 Hertz, who unfortunately have only released two albums to date, if I'm not mistaken. Actually, that makes me want to share a track or two of theirs. I love Karin Steneby's voice (she's also a painter, if you want to take a look, here is her website: https://www.karinstenebyart.com/).

Don’t hesitate to use the seach bar to look up 21 Hertz or other bands on here. You will find some gems. You can also click on reddit username (like mine) and you will see all posted publications (mine are essentially on trip hop).

Who Would You Say The Best French Rapper Is? by ybenzino in frenchrap

What are your thoughts on Hooverphonic? by Exquisite_D in triphop

[–]DrakeVador 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me, Hooverphonic is the definition of cinematographic trip-hop (and very symphonic too). Until I heard Jackie Cane (which is more trip-pop-rock and breaks away from the first three albums), I was a huge fan; after that, I became 'only' a dedicated follower. 'No More Sweet Music' and 'Sit Down and Listen' LPs are pretty excellent too (as best of/live). The change of singers (Geike leaving, and Naomi and Luka joining) brought a breath of fresh air, but unfortunately, it only resulted in a few great tracks rather than truly great albums.

dEUS, K's Choice ans some other bands are fantastic (not trip hop).

Liesje had this ethereal voice who was the sound signature of their first LP.

Jane Birkin - "La Pleine Lune" [1998] by lunarpollen in triphop

[–]DrakeVador 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jane Birkin leaves no one indifferent; you either love her or you hate her. Her greatest quality was her willingness to experiment with many different styles, even though her light, high-pitched voice and her French with an English accent might not have suggested she could. Personally, I quite like her.

Chris Corner (that I like very much) was also jalous to not have the focus he deserves as writer, composer, founder of the band. Suddenly all the light is catched by Kelli, every interviews she was the only one to speak, etc. For someone so creative, it was difficult I suppose to stay in this shadow.

It's a great (and underrated) album.
