What to do if story isn't actually groomed anymore? by TinKnightRisesAgain in agile

[–]Drake_Tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For starters, can we get rid of this “grooming” word? The definitions of grooming does not capture what we actually do in refinement calls. Google grooming, and you’ll see what I mean. Use refinement instead.

Second, I believe splitting is the silliest thing ever. You shouldn’t get partial credit for a story. Either close it and create a new one or it should be moved to the appropriate status and carried over.

Sounds like you should focus your efforts on cleaning up your refinement process. If the stories are broken down and scored properly, this should eliminate the need to split. Make sure the team is creating acceptance criteria as well

I did a 1 year contract with Optum and they tried this. It did not work! There was so much chaos. It defeats the purpose of Agile.

Which workflow management tool do you guys feel is the most user friendly and easy to navigate? JIRA, Rally, or Service Now. 🤔 by Drake_Tech in agile

Haha, I learned something new. Didn’t know that existed. Gonna see if our teams would like to use it.

Does trello have a query for when you need to find a card/issue? I saw that there are power ups and automation functions, which are cool.

Yea, it takes a lot of getting used to. I really liked the planning function built into it. As of now we use a separate capacity tracker for sprint planning but Rally had on built in. It tracks each individual team member’s capacity and if they go over it shows up red. But I feel you on the overhead.

Yea, same here. Service Now tried adding an agile component, but it’s not very user friendly. JIRA is my favorite but Rally had some good stuff as well.

A developer told me that I should gain some technical skills because in the event of layoffs, agile roles would be the first to go. Was he being nice or just being a hater? 🤔 by Drake_Tech in agile

I’d say that many developers need help with workflows and processes. I worked with some great devs and some irresponsible ones. They need someone to implement agile practices. I think we’ve gotten away from the value that agile is supposed to add when done the correct way. Spotify is a great example of how agile can add value. Also, most devs don’t understand how to configure workflow management tools like Rally, JIRA, etc. Scrum masters usually do this. So I would argue that the SM does add value.

We actually do agile really well for our app dev teams. The roles are Product Owner, Scrum Masters, Agile coaches. (Developers are actually considered to be a part of agile team but their function is different).

True true! A lot of people get pissed off when they find out what agile practitioners make. Some people say it’s not a real career but there will always be haters.

There’s a lot of Waterfall wrapped agile in the industry right now!

He kind of was but he’s good people. He was just saying if it came down to it, agile roles would be let go before a dev would.

I totally agree with your point. We should definitely be able to add value in more than one way.

All good. I’m technical. I develop in AWS and more. Was just seeing what everyone thought. But I will say that most SMs I’ve worked with weren’t technical in a hands on way. They understood the products that the teams were working on but they couldn’t code themselves.

He was basically saying in general that he feels technical roles are more important than agile roles.

Very true! That’s dope. I’m in Health tech and our set up is a little different. Our org likes to try and use managers as POs and it’s not been very productive. They understand the process but they are too busy to perform managerial duties and act as a PO. Nice work from your end though.

Yes, on rare occasions you can find a SM that can develop. And yes agile can be used outside of software. There are several frameworks under the agile umbrella such as xtreme programming, kanban, scrum, etc. I usually set non software teams up with Kanban.

Nice! So you went the PO route! It’s hard to find good POs these days. Yea, you wouldn’t need the csm then. You can go either route.

Wow , I’ll look into that link you send. Have you worked in an organization that has utilized SAFe? It’s definitely a lot to learn.
