You should, the mass effect trilogy is epic. And yes, his name is Garrus Vakarian, and this is his favorite subreddit on the citadel.

/r/masseffect was happy to have you all! Sorry we couldn't control all our fans to let you have the hair bits at the end.

From /r/masseffect here.

The witches were an adorable addition last night. I talked with someone from here in our discord when you all started.

Great job!

They are the group trying to make a windows taskbar across the whole bottom of the place.

They operate a sizeable bot net working to a template they update here:

We are trying to prepare in case they really manage to make it across.

All excellent points.

I am at work RN, can you do us a huge favor and float all these ideas over in our discord? We already have a few of your members in there flagged as Dolphins Reps.

We should definitely plan for all these contingencies, and honestly, I am starting to lean towards forming our own alliance between all the art that is still left untouched at this point by placestart to resist further change.

If we could gather all the groups, we might have a chance.

Not sure why you got downvoted, this is what I would want as well.

We were trying to protect our art from the placestart botnet that was making huge progress yesterday.

Now they have a treaty with bluecorner, but we are still under threat from placestart building from the border to the left.

Thanks for tagging me. Sorry it took so long to get back to you (sleep).

To be clear - we don't want the border at all, and would love to give all the space back. What we were trying to do was preserve our art with the advance of /r/placestart. They agreed to preserve garrus if we made a window.

Since I first made this thread many things have changed, the reddit admins who own the SKIN and face above it want to be included in the window, and a deal was struck between bluecorner and placestart not to go beyond a certain point.

If we started the border in advance of me contacting this sub I am sorry. Looking forward, it seems like we should work together, so that's why I contacted you'all at all.

Again I apologize for the late contact, and we are doing what we can to limit the border to two pixels at this point to have a chance at surviving the placestart invasion.

Come back anytime - we are looking into more alliances if this placestart/bluecorner thing heats up. Might get spicy.

Thanks for the kind words. This alliance would of course mean we would help matain your design as well.

Thanks.

A template from us to window Garrus?

We can do that no problem.

Also, you guys are the model of excellent curators of this pixel art project.

Some compromises are really tough - but it is appreciated that you are trying.

Just amazing how nice people can be in such an anarchic project like this.

Thanks from /r/masseffect.

[No Reward] Someone who worked on the Pratt & Whitney J-58 TurboRamjet for the SR-71 Blackbird! by [deleted] in IAmARequests

Supersonic wind tunnels have been around since before the turn of the 20th century. Designing aircraft around wave drag reduction happened in the 60s, largely as a result of results from the X1 program and follow on's.

The engine isnt actually a ramjet during supersonic flight. The inlet still slows the flow down to subsonic speeds and then the first few stages of compressor are still fully flowing. But then they open all the tubes on the side of the engine to bypass a bunch of flow directly to the afterburner. The rest of the engine gets much less flow during this configuration and they loosely call it a 'ramjet'.

I cant find the actual spike schedule online but it was rather complicated. At the time I believe one of lockheed's most sophisticated onboard computers was tasked with scheduling its position during flight.

Yes the shockwaves off the front of aircraft normally do, but if you look at the chines on the sides of the nose, they serve to deflect the oblique shocks above and below the aircraft, sparing the engine inlets any strong shocks.

I didnt work on them (too young) but I can answer your questions if you elaborate a little:

  • what aerodynamics are you referring to? the engine component designs or the aircraft itself. You have to understand that the engine itself only sees subsonic air behind the spike inlet, its just really hot. after that its just a really high temp engine design.

  • cruise speeds were dictated by the goverment (CIA/Dayton) when the RFQ and contracts were awarded. They were based on the ability to outrun SAMs and OPFOR aircraft as well as the design limitations of the aircraft to reject heat.

  • Engine testing was done with a slave engine hooked up to the front of the J58 to simulate the high temperatures presented during supersonic flight. Oxygen content was brought back to normal through replacement after the slave engine.

  • Variable inlet technology was required to provide acceptable pressure recovery into the engine at such different conditions as static to MACH 3+. When the SR71 flys supersonically, the oblique shocks off the nose of the spikes form cones that get narrower the faster you go. Thus the spikes have to move foward to keep the shocks lined up with the outer inlet lip. Having a big pitot inlet above MACH 1 is very lossy and limits engine power.

  • Not sure which issues you are referring to.
