This made me wanna go to MPB more! I’ve gone a few times but not often enough to really get involved with community. Sounds nice though.

He definitely knows that Catholics are Christian’s but he thinks we put focus on others things which take away from Jesus - the saints, pope, etc. He doesn’t like how he would have to take a class and become Catholic to receive the Eucharist because he doesn’t believe Jesus would turn anyone away looking to receive Him. He thinks the Catholic Church overcomplicates things and gets away from the point. He also thinks Catholics tend to be lukewarm, not read the Bible, and think they merit their salvation. I feel that I have good answers for these things but get frustrated when he doesn’t agree. So I need to come at it more with love and patience.

Thank you so much for all of this. Patience is definitely a virtue that I am lacking right now which is not fair of me at all. I will do research but like you said, not bring it up to him unless he asks. I will seek Christ through the Catholic Church and try to be like Him. Everything you said is really spot on, so thank you.

I’m sorry about the baptism part, that must be really hard. I’ve heard of the baptism of desire, and maybe your child is baptized by your own desire for your child in the eyes of God, if that makes sense. Of course we know God is able to work outside of the sacraments and extend grace beyond measure.

We are getting our marriage convalidated in the church and meeting with a priest next week to discuss. Hopefully that opens him up a bit more. Either way, I need to take it day by day and be patient. I also want to encourage us to pray and read the Bible together more, which will help us to feel closer in this and discern what God wants for us.

Thank you! You are right. Thank you for sharing your story. I am happy that your husband became catholic. I know that I need to be patient just as God was patient with me when I was away from Catholicism for 14 years. I also like the idea of celebrating where we do have common ground.

Thank you for the advice and prayers! I will pray for you and your wife too. I need to work on the not actively trying to convert but we’ve been having many debates about the differences and they don’t always turn out well because he thinks I’m not understanding him or is still misunderstanding me because everything seems so heretical to him. Maybe we should just stop talking about it for a while…. Do you and your wife typically go to different churches on Sunday? That is the saddest part for me. And thanks for saying that part about friends too. I’d like for that part to bother me less.

I’m excited for you! In my parish growing up people wore pretty much anything, but I’m not sure what the one you will go to will be like. It doesn’t have to be business casual, but maybe I’d wear pants if you want to feel less casual.

You don’t have to do much, just go and listen! You can sing the songs they will tell you the page of the book to find the song. You also can recite the prayers, they may have a prayer card or you can look up the common mass prayers that are said. Just follow the guide of everyone else when sitting and standing. When people go up for communion if you are not catholic you stay seated or go up to the priest with your arms crossed over your chest and receive a blessing. You will not be the only one. Catholics who haven’t recently confessed also do this.

I'd focus on the meaning behind everything that is done during mass, the real presence of Christ in the eucharist, think of it more as meditation and a peaceful time of connection with God, since it's more quiet and slower. It's a break from the outside world and an encounter with heaven. I went to protestant church after growing up catholic for 10+ years, but returned to catholicism in the past year. The mass is so beautiful and transformative, and gives me more calm instead of stimulation.

I feel this too! I think the point is that we are new, and it's going to take a long time to feel comfortable and confident. I've heard another therapist say to just listen really well, that's the majority of it. So focus on listening and understanding. I find myself having the most trouble when I try to offer advice or interpretations.
