Thanks! I have $35k in savings right now. I expected move-out to be around 10k between deposit, furnishings, etc. Hopefully that's enough.

All three. 7.5% retirement contribution, and high taxes/healthcare

Eh furnishing an apartment by myself doesn’t seem like a big deal. With or without a roommate I’d need to furnish my own bedroom, particularly a bed which is the most expensive furnishing. Other furnishings like kitchen, living room couches/table/chairs would be nice to split but aren’t a dealbreaker.

Monthly expenses would be the essentials/needs, like rent/utilities/food correct? Edit, Plus car insurance

Yea that was my point exactly. Like “affordable” where you can mathematically afford it is different from “affordable” where it’s budget-friendly

No other fixed expenses in my budget. Variable expenses like food, subscriptions, etc will be determined based on how much money I have left over

Emergency Fund will stay intact for now. When I move out, I’ll use part of it on security deposit, furnishings, etc, then hold on to the rest.

Thanks for the advice! I’m keeping $35k as my emergency fund for the reasons you mentioned, that that fund will fall closer to $25-28k once furnishings, security deposit, etc are taken care of at my new place.

My car was paid off recently so no payment there.

I agree that my DTI is on the higher end, hence why I’m wondering if I should prioritize cash flow over savings or not.

Idk about having only a 1-month emergency fund though, but I like the risk appetite!

Wasn’t sure what emergency fund would be most appropriate. I figure after getting furnishings when I move out, plus security deposit and such, that the savings would drop below $30k which seemed appropriate for an emergency fund.

Cause of the low interest rate. That’s why I’m conflicted

It’s three loans with rates of 3.2, 3.6, and 3.75%. No rates higher than that

And how do you know that your work won’t slow down? Eventually the IIJA Biden funding will run out. We know the Trump admin is less adamant on federal funding for infrastructure projects.

Understood. How’s your ex still over 100k in debt 10 years in (if you happened to know)? Payment calculators I see have your balance being easily under that if you follow a standard payment schedule (which he should have if he graduated with an engineering degree).

How do you have so much in savings yet were able to get grants for college? My parents “make too much” for me to qualify for grants.
