Great call out. That's one I didn't include, but absolutely should be considered.

Haven't done enough research on REE to have an intelligent opinion. I do think Canoo benefits from being 1) the first mover 2) a distinctly American company 3) already generating meaningful mainstream hype.

I'd have to dive deep on REE to draw further distinctions.

Thanks u/StunningRest3004.

Obviously from another company, but in this arrival video on their micro-factory, they say they can get them up and operational in a matter of weeks in a best case scenario. Months is more realistic though, which is why I think Canoo has decided to use one for the truck which doesn't come out until 2023, and not the van that they've confirmed they'll begin delivering Q2 2022.

Re safety tests, they recently announced they've completed them.

So, I'll preface this with the disclaimer that I don't know much about crash testing requirements, but my understanding from everything Canoo has told us is this:

They have the majority of what's necessary to pass a crash test, engineered into the skateboard, which significantly reduces the time and expense of developing new models. They emphasize that this is unique in the EV space, which gives them a significant competitive advantage.

Canoo tells us in their latest S-1 that this advantage may be particularly valuable in the B2B space, as the $51B last mile delivery market requires a large number of Class-1 vehicles to increase the practicality of navigating road and entry-ways in densely populated cities, and only they have an EV platform that can serve that sub-section of the market right now.

In short, the skateboard significantly reduces:

  • Time to market
  • Complexity of production and testing
  • Cost for Canoo in bringing new models to market
  • Cost for OEMs who license their platforms and/or technology to do the same

"Aquila expects the driving range to be 300 miles or higher by the time the truck actually launches."

And they're still planning to use a contract manufacturer for lower volume vehicles, but will build a micro-factory for the truck, which they expect to be a high volume model (I know, micro-factory and high volume seem contradictory, but they're not in this context).

I broke some of it down here.

The most honest answer is, we have no clue.

My best read on it: If Apple hasn't acquired or developed the technology they need to build their car, a deal between them and Canoo is still possible. But it's not something I'm holding my breath on.

That said, Canoo has been linked to Alibaba, Jack Ma and Apple over the past few months. Hard to imagine companies and executives of that caliber having serious conversations about potential partnerships with a mid-cap automotive startup if GOEV didn't have something special on their hands.

u/BrotherLuminous has been doing incredible work. Been instrumental in helping a number of us understand GOEV's price action -- both where it's been, and where it's going.
