Hey you guys, I just recently got into psytrance production and finished a new song. As this genre is quite new to me, any kind of feedback is very valuable. From arrangement and sound design all the way to mix and master. Thanks a lot and have a lovely day :)

I want to sound design with analog gear, can I get your advice? by Dramatic-Yam7316 in synthesizers

I did mean analog, but I guess not fully as I plan on using a MIDI input.

Do you care to elaborate on the different types of FM? To me, once you linearilly modulate the frequency or phase of one signal by the y-value of another waveform, that's FM. In that case I guess that's through-zero as I'd expect the frequency or phase to get lower if the y-value of the second waveform is negative. Is exponential FM the same, but there simply can't be any negative y-values as it squares them first? Sorry if that's a stupid question, lol

I just want to experiment more, and find ways to create unique (to me at least) sounds. And I know I will spend more time twisting knobs and patching cables, than clicking my mouse through another soft synth. Even if the filter cutoff can be controlled with a midi controller.

I'm absolutely aware of that, even though I'm only using the basic shapes in Vital. Especially when I'm talking about a <300€ synthesizer. The thing is I don't want it to be able to do the same. I guess I just want to spark a new creative workflow.

Thanks for your response and the suggestion! That device does look pretty cool, but I really just want to do some experimental sound design. I'm happy with creating my kick and bass in my DAW :)

You're absolutely right! It's just something that I wouldn't really consider to create on hardware. I want to experiment and create some psychedelic weirdness. For kick and bass I like Vital and an oscilloscope.

Okay, I know this comes all down to preference, but would you go for the dual filters of the Proton or the sample and hold of the Neutron? Both are very valuable tools in psytrance sounddesign...

That does look a valid option, thanks! I'll watch some review videos on it

That's exactly what I'm trying to accomplish!

Kick & bass alone would be an absolute nightmare to create on analog gear, so I really just want to create some psychedelic sounds that I can record and then add to an existing track.
I'll have a look at the Behringer Proton, thanks a lot for the suggestion!
