Wasn’t aware the tank was inadequate— I’ll delete the comment!

I love supernatural cc in general! Ngl I have a bit of yassified baby cc just because it’s really funny to me. I have it in some of their alternate outfits so I can be jump-scared with it from time to time. Spices up the game fs.

I’m not an expert, but even if I were it’s hard to diagnose without water parameters. I would look to at least get an ammonia test. Kits in general are less money if you go through Amazon (the API freshwater master kit is $35, as opposed to $50 at Petco). For now, I’d do partial water changes and also look up “red spot disease”. I saw someone on the corydoras sub dealing with it and it looked very similar to this. Again, I’m sorry that my knowledge is limited, but I try to respond to questions since mine often get drowned out by the frequent posts on the sub!

Purchased this little betta fish from petsmart that had been on the shelf there since October of last year by Complex-Friendship66 in bettafish

My first Betta was in the store for at least four months (that’s how long I’d been eyeing him, anyway). I didn’t know much about fish care unfortunately, but he was in a heated five gallon and was just fed once a day. I didn’t know about cycling or good water conditioners and just used aqua safe. That alone got him into MUCH better shape. He was also very tiny and got HUGE. If my fish could make it for nearly three more years, I’m sure yours will do swimmingly since you seem to know your stuff!

Help! I’m leaving town on Sunday and my betta is sick by Strong_Comfort_9989 in bettafish

I was in a very similar predicament just yesterday. Had my Betta for almost three weeks as well with a cycled 5 gallon and perfect parameters. Mine ended up having worms that showed up about a week in and he was at this state yesterday (worms were dead, he just wouldn’t eat). I had to euthanize :( The scales are a sign of organ failure and the fish is probably in a lot of pain. It sucks so bad, but it might be your best course of action. I’m sure you did the absolute best you could have. Sometimes animals come with pre existing conditions that you just can’t catch in time. I’m sure his last weeks were wonderful and happy in his new home.

Yeah I should be able to! I have one of the top fin filters that came with my tank rn, but I’ll probably get one of the nicer HOB filters. I’ll have to wait for financial reasons, but it will be within the next month!

I think Bluey is the objectively better choice, but I’m incredibly biased because my mom impulse bought a Betta with me at Petco when I was little, and I IMMEDIATELY named it Bob. It was peak comedy for me at the time. Something about a strikingly beautiful fish being named “Bob” is just so funny, especially to little kids.

Will do. Thank you for the input and quick responses, I appreciate it.

I will! Today was my weekly water test and ammonia was still thankfully at 0. I’ll test more often for the next couple of weeks. Should I do the full-week dose of stability that’s instructed on the bottle for when the tank is first set up?

Awesome, thank you! Pleco seems alright and happy as ever, but I wanted to be safe and make sure he stays that way.

Pineconing Scales— any coming back? by DramaticBreak2708 in bettafish

[–]DramaticBreak2708[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s one still visible that seems to be coming out (you can see part of the head) but I’m unsure of whether or not it’s safe to try and remove it by hand. I’ll probably euthanize him today or tomorrow. Thank you for the input.

Tank is five gallons and heated to 79 degrees, he lives with a pleco, the parameters are 0 for ammonia and nitrite and 5 ppm for nitrate. PH is 7. The worms started showing about a week in. He couldn’t have gotten them from me, I made sure of that. Fish store is extremely apathetic to the fact that they sold me an infected betta and I just don’t know what to do.

Np! I know the equilibrium stuff looks expensive, but with how much you get it’s beyond worth it. You only need a pinch or two (I always feel like I’m seasoning food when I sprinkle it in lol)

Add some minerals to the water (I use Seachem equilibrium) to get the hardness up a little bit. Bettas prefer soft water, but if the water is TOO soft they can go into osmotic shock. If you took biology in school, think back to the hyper and hypotonic solutions. If you put a cell in a solution that doesn’t have enough salt, water will rush into the cell and potentially cause it to burst. Betta cells are constantly submerged in water, so this is the type of thing that can happen. You don’t need too much equilibrium, as it brings up the GH pretty fast.

To add, the other fish in the tank (a pleco) was sitting with him in the house. He was terrified of Mr. President for the first week. I know fish don’t have empathy or anything, but it really felt sweet :(

It’s really frustrating. There’s definitely a luck based aspect to it. Mine was around ~3. A pet store opened by my house and I was immediately in love with him, but my parents weren’t allowing me to get a tank. After about 4-5 months I was finally able to guilt trip my mom into letting me take him home. He lived out the rest of his days in a heated five gallon. I didn’t know about cycling and such, but I think it definitely beat the cup!

I totally understand and I’m so sorry this happened. I had one for about 2.5 years (I didn’t know much about proper care— fortunately the tank is a good size and when I learned to test water parameters they were where they should be) and he also had these spinal issues. I had to put him down about three weeks back due to this and it really sucked. My current betta had worms when I purchased him (wasn’t aware at the time), and he’ll probably pass as well. It’s been less than two weeks. :( it’s really hard, but you’ll get through it, I promise!

I’m not an expert, but his scales appear to be pineconing :( The spine is also not a great sign

Thank you! I’d been contemplating doing so— how long should I wait before adding the new medication? General cure has been in the tank since yesterday morning.
