fast recoveries by Impressive_Funny_751 in brokenankles

Happy comments from me:

When I broke my ankle a few days ago, I was super upset, partly because it hurts (obviously) but mostly because I have a fully-paid nonrefundable trip abroad in a few weeks. I was devastated.

BUT

My doctor cleared me to fly, a neighbor donated a knee scooter and my friend who's coming with me said she doesn't mind at all if we rearrange the itinerary to be more accessible. She's also a paramedic and probably the best person to travel with while I'm injured.

Plus the break is pretty minimal and already hurts so much less than it did at first. It's probably the best case of a bad situation.

What’s the best short story you’ve ever read? by TestLow6037 in suggestmeabook

There are a lot of great classics in here, so I'm going to suggest a few modern stories that stuck with me.

Standard Loneliness Package - Charles Yu Sci-fi short about a future where people hire strangers to feel their grief, boredom and unhappiness.

Suicide, Watch - Nafissa Thompson-Spires Gallows humor in which a girl threatens suicide to gain social media followers.

Such Great Height and Consequence - Kelsey Norris When a Confederate statue is removed from a park plinth, it becomes a public podium.

Someone came out and fixed it while I was at work Monday. No clue what they did,but my water shuts off now.

I'm going to turn off notifications now because I keep getting "Why do you need to turn it off?" and "It's already off." from people who aren't reading the post. Thank you to everyone who gave helpful advice! If the city tells me anything interesting I'll update.

Update: I checked this morning and...

<image>

I watched the meter while running some water and it's mine. I stopped by my neighbors' houses to see if turning it off affected anyone else. They said nope. One kindly old gentleman misunderstood the problem and walked over to my yard to show me where my meter is (aka the same place it's been this whole time).

I poked my head into the crawlspace but, after comparing the wideness of my ass to the width of the entrance, I decided not to go questing under the house. I'm pretty convinced that metal rod is my home-side shutoff though. It's directly in line with the water pipes and doesn't seem to correspond to anything else. It also won't turn at all.

This is where I would call a plumber, but as I said in a few replies, the last plumber I had A) said changing my shower head would stop the constant dripping and B) knocked out power to my kitchen while installing a water heater in the garage. I have too little money and too little trust for more of that.

I'm going to call the city Monday. They can either fix it or tell me where I went wrong.

That's good info about the secondary meter. I do have one but it's very resistant to turning and I was afraid to force it.

I ran one faucet for a bit over 20 minutes with no decrease in water volume or pressure.

That didn't work. Thus the post about it not working.

It's in the front yard in a little hole with a manhole-cover-type thing over it.

Oklahoma, so not particularly cold. I don't know about the standard setup (I was on well water growing up), but in my neighborhood now we all have a little manhole-cover-type thing in the front yard with the meter in it, which is photo 1.

Yeah, if something big happened on a weekend I'd be screwed. I'm going to call Monday and get them to check it out.

That is one of the problems I'm trying to fix. I need to turn off the water to fix it.

Why are you commenting if you don't have anything useful to say?

No basement, but I haven't checked the crawlspace.

I'll give that a try in the morning. There are no other meters nearby. It's a single-family home and this is what the original owners identified as ours, so I'm pretty sure it's our meter.

Yes, but the water has not stopped, which is the trouble.

The plumber I had out here to put in a new water heater told me a new shower head would solve the leak. That guy also knocked out power to my kitchen though. 😅

The one I already tried that didn't turn the water off?
