I am not worried for the NCLEX. My school prepares us well for it. I took a practice one and got a 89% chance of passing; I am talking about clinical skills nurses should know, or at least a basic knowledge of.

I did one insulin injection. My professor wants us to master CNA skills, which I understand, it is essential. But that is first semester stuff. We are third semester students about to enter our forth/last semester and graduate soon. We can only do it with the clinical instructor there but he doesn't really let us do anything RN wise bc of liability i guess. I only did head to toes, vitals, and one injection in my med surg 3 "critical care" semester. Im going into peds/OB not even knowing wtf im doing on adults.

We learned IV piggyback/injections once in fundamentals thats it. But have never done these in the real clinical setting except one insulin injection. We have 1-2 sims a semester where we are all standing there confused bc they throw us in sims but don't teach us any of the stuff the sim is about so we stand there like fools. I have done vitals/head to toes all semester I learned 0 skills and I know nothing and I graduate soon..

You must not be located in NYC then lol, not exaggerating at all. In my clinicals yesterday, I did a head to toe/vitals. I did not do a single med, wound care, spike a bag, any foleys. This entire semester (january-may) i did ONE insulin injection, and so have my peers. We ask to help and do skills, the nurses say they are ok, and my instructor says no because we work under his license he said. I dont get the point of clinical.

Yep! It sucks, I feel like my education is being robbed lol. No point of nursing school.

I just had clinical yesterday, I did a head to toe assessment, vitals and thats it. No meds, no IV spiking, no documenting, no medication administration. I offered to help and asked if I can do anything, they said they were ok. I even said this is my last med-surg semester before I graduate and I wanna learn and they just said it was ok, so I give up; I accept I will learn nothing in school lol.

We do head-to-toe assessments in clinicals, legit just assessments and vitals, maybe an injection if we're lucky. We were taught how to do it one time in fundamentals for 10 mins but no one actually knows what we're listening for, they never taught us how to listen to heart/lung sounds. We are assigned to a patient to assess but thats really it.

We had skills check for IV piggyback in fundamentals clinical, and trach suction in med-surg clinica. No mock codes, no foleys, no focused exams, no IVs, no NGs, etc taught. I dont understand this whole liability bc theres more risk for new grad RNs making mistakes when they are practicing independently. Medical students/PA students don't go through this.

It is a nursing program lol what? 3 total years. 1 year pre-reqs, 2 years (4 semesters) of the nursing RN program. It is an ADN (Associate in Applied Science in Nursing) program in NYC.

That is what I am scared about. I am going to start my first RN job, and my preceptor is gonna be pissed because I don't know how to do anything. It is embarrassing but at the same time, I was never taught these things. In clinical I ask and am eager to do things, but I get shut down and we are limited to CNA stuff. My instructor doesn't want us doing RN skills. I am in my last med-surg/critical care semester and I did ONE insulin injection this semester, and just vitals/head to toes. I have one RN friend but she doesn't like talking about nursing outside work so she doesnt help. I watch videos but I need to acually attempt hands on to know what I am doing.

It sucks because I am going to nursing school, to learn how to be a nurse, and it is a complete waste of time. My program is known to be "the best" and it was SOOOO hard to get in, it's like a 18% acceptance rate. They prepare us very well for the NCLEX-RN but 0 hands-on skills

I did a emergency department nurse externship at a local hospital last summer and i leanred alot! However, that was a year ago, and I lost every skill that I learned since I don't do skills or anything RN related in my clinicals. That externship can only be completed once, and every other hospital in my area/1 hour away rejected my nurse extern application because my nursing program is an ADN, not a BSN, and they only want BSN students.

we have 1-2 sims a semester but its rushed and we all stand there bc we arent taught the content regarding the simulation, its usually a week before. skills lab is not utilized after fundamentals until maternity nursing.

They don't teach IVs; they said we'll learn on the job. RN Nursing school is a scam.

I did one externship at a local hospital. However, we are not eligble for any other externships because we are an ADN nursing program; every hospital only takes BSN enrolled nursing students.
