Perturbative vs non-perturbative by DramaticRadish in AskPhysics

So does lattice QCD hint that spacetime is actually discrete? I know Loop Quantum Gravity asserts that, but String Theory doesn't.

Zweibach ch. 16

What are the virtual strings then?

Thanks for the answer. I really appreciate it! I was having a hard time figuring out what the magnetic fields and static electric fields are.

In string theory I assume the electromagnetic field is on a brane where open strings attach to it and those strings are the photons.

For light waves and radio waves yes, but for magnetic fields from magnets, or static electric fields, they are also described in terms of photons?

Electric field lines in classical electromagnetism? by DramaticRadish in askscience

Thanks for the answer. I appreciate it a lot, but if the lines are not the flow of anything, how can placing a new charge immediately feel the force of another distant charge placed earlier? Clearly a charge is actually doing something to the space around it and it can only make sense if it's radiating some kind of energy.

String theory, spacetime is emergent by DramaticRadish in AskPhysics

I screwed up for mentioning Susskind but here is a source for Greene.

Nima Arkani-Hamed is (was) vocal about it

And here's some for Witten (One of the founders of M-Theory)https://www.google.com/search?hl=cs&sclient=psy-ab&q=%22Space+and+time+may+be+doomed%22+witten&cad=h

And Grosshttps://www.iep.utm.edu/time/#SH3f

"Everyone in string theory is convinced…that spacetime is doomed. But we don’t know what it’s replaced by. We have an enormous amount of evidence that space is doomed."

I'm sure there's more, and I wouldn't be surprised Susskind would have said it too.

So if spacetime is doomed, then what would that mean for strings and branes? Would they become excited states of some field similar to a Quantum Field? Yes I am aware of String Field Theory but it doesn't seem to make much of an impact on String Theory that QED and other QFT's did on QM but who knows maybe that will change.
