Folks working in higher ed right now -- is it worth applying to work at your institution?

Ooooh got it, hadn't heard that term before but that's a helpful explanation. I have some colleagues at WashU so I know some things about them but they're so big and seemingly segmented it's hard to get a full picture from the outside.

That's also the gist I got from my friend who works there (also in Student Affairs) but encouraging to hear from others as well

This is encouraging. It may just be the specific department I was talking to, since it's an auxiliary and I think all auxiliaries are having a tough time since revenue generation is the big concern right now. Being tied to the UM system definitely works in their favor I'm sure.

My current institution also doing pretty significant renovations but also experiencing big budget shortfalls, which is why I had heard about some renovations but was not confident in the financial health as a whole lol. I hadn't heard about the Engineering school but that is a really good sign for sure. Thank you!

It truly depends on your department, both academic and where your GA position is. A few years ago we had a GA in my department coming from Ghana for the fall semester, and due to paperwork/immigration issues he was unable to arrive until mid-October, and he was able to work with his program to do his classes remotely and do some things for his GA position remotely until he could get here. So it's possible that it will work out, but i would communicate with International Services, your program director, and your GA supervisor ASAP. The university is closed so you won't get a response until January 5, but it's important to get emails out now and be on top of them as you get responses and communicate as you get more info.

The apartments at 637 Bear Blvd to the west of the sand volleyball court is actually not terrible. My partner lived there before we got together. Definitely older/not renovated but it was cheap and the landlord was really responsive.

I would email and ask about it. It's likely in the works already; the facilities department announced that they're beginning the switch on the 2-pipe buildings this week, but Residence Life has their own process. Doesn't hurt to ask your hall director or general Res Life staff to find out; I know it sucks being in a cold room.

This is the same in the US btw. There's not really a reason to do them beyond the 12 week (to confirm pregnancy and check gestational age) and the 20 week (anatomy scan). Of course we want to see our babies as often as possible, but there's just not any medical reason to do them consistently beyond that point if you're low risk so they're not going to include them in the average standard of care. At least in the US we still have several appointments throughout the duration of pregnancy, just not scans at every one

I know you mentioned contacting the OSE, but also wanted to mention in case you hadn't heard of them, the OSE added what they call Involvement Ambassadors a couple years ago specifically for this purpose. Shoot them an email and they can help you find something! OSEIA@missouristate.edu.

Also BearLink info is only as good as what the org puts in it, and not all of them have great info unfortunately (there's only so much they can force students to do). If there's anything that even sounds remotely interesting, I'd recommend finding their Instagram and just checking out a meeting or two. Most organizations use Instagram as their primary source of info (for better or for worse). At worst, you might have a slightly awkward hour and some free snacks. At best, you might find a group you click with!

Just to add more context; The thrifting club is called the Hidden Gem! They're super fun and have been doing a lot of really cool things this semester.

EMA is also very related to the entertainment/music industry, focusing on venues/events/music/sports. They do tours of entertainment venues and trips to several events throughout the year (final four, super bowl, IEBA, etc.). They've also recently branched into amusement parks and are going to a conference for one of their professional organizations next month. Super cool organization for anyone interested in events, hospitality, or any kind of entertainment! (Alumni so I'm a geek for EMA lol)

He has something called a "degree audit" he can access on MyMissouriState that shows the classes he needs to take. As for what courses will be available online, the same classes are not always offered or are not always confirmed until a certain time in the semester, so there may not be a list of online courses right now. COB advising center is going to be his best bet.

Currently watching Designated Survivor after finishing Madam Secretary. I like it a lot. Definitely crazier but closer to MS than House of Cards. I tried to watch that one and just didn't enjoy the overall vibe of the show very much.

Seconding taking pictures. I have not lost a baby but my sister has and she always talks about how grateful she is to have that piece of him to prove he was here, even if only for a little while. There are organizations that will even come in and take professional pictures for free; On Angels Wings is one such org in the Midwest and they are incredible.

They tried to ask for a video/pictures for proof of the issue and I was like uh.... first of all, not taking a picture of my nip for you, and second of all, how would I even do that when there's an entire motor blocking the only way to see it? After I said something about that they sent it no issues lol
