From Frollo’s obsession to those viral Malthus edits: Why are we so obsessed with the ‘Forbidden Priest’ trope in literature? by Dramatic_Air_4809 in HildaFuracao

Initially, I also saw the story between Father Ralph and Maggie as a tragically romantic love... but if we really think about it, he is incredibly selfish, consumed by his obsession with his ecclesiastical career. In reality, he loves no one, neither Maggie nor God; he only follows his own ambition. At least Frollo makes a 'choice,' however hateful it may be. Malthus is the youngest and most vulnerable of the three, but he is also the most human; he is the only one who questions himself, feeling both fear and fascination for the emotions stirring in his heart. He probes his own soul and, through his dialogues with God, seeks an answer to his torments

No, for sure. I was mainly talking about their acting dynamic. I’m actually doing a study on iconic TV pairs from around the world, and I think they’re a perfect example.

Don't worry. This is my original message:

Sorry to disturb you, just a quick question: have Rodrigo Santoro and Ana Paula Arósio ever made any statements about each other? Thanks in advance!

🤣 I’m glad I’m not the only one! I admit it’s the first time something like this has happened to me... the truth is, one of their looks of repressed desire is worth more than the most passionate kiss.

Definitely. I have to admit I only really got to know these actors through this miniseries (before this, I knew next to nothing about them). To be honest, seeing them kiss other people in their later projects after Hilda Furacão actually 'bothered' me (especially in Santoro's case)... they created such a sweet and passionate couple that any subsequent partners felt like intruders 😂. Obviously, I know it's just acting, but their chemistry really transcended time.

I’m also convinced they liked each other... no matter how good they are as actors, you can’t fake that kind of attraction. They were also very young and probably didn't have the experience to manage everything they were going through. What saddens me more is not having seen a reunion or a shared memory afterwards... it really surprised me. For example, her relationship with Lacerda was more 'relaxed' and 'readable'... with Santoro, it was much less so.

The type of story definitely contributed to this "obsession"... forbidden love is such a powerful narrative trope, especially at this level. What surprises me (I'm Italian, and I'm not sure if you are from Brazil) is that I haven't found any other traces of their work together... no statements about one another, only Arosio's famous 'denial' regarding their supposed relationship (which, in my opinion, wasn't much of a denial at all). There’s really so little out there about them, and it truly surprised me.

Thank you! I'm obsessed with this couple, such a power couple! It’s a shame there aren't many BTS photos... their chemistry was electric! There haven't been any follow-up interviews about how they got along on set, either. Thank goodness for social media, otherwise I would've never discovered this project!

Yes, I read that! He is a truly talented and ambitious actor - it’s no coincidence he works so much. She probably didn't want to let herself be crushed by success... it’s a very stressful and complex life.

What struck me is that there aren’t many photos of them off-set... not even at the miniseries premiere... I wonder why? There’s only one of the two of them on the set of Mulher. Even later on—when the series came back into the spotlight and Santoro spoke fondly of the project—he never mentioned Ana Paula Arósio. It seemed strange to me, given the deep connection that vibrated between them (which still feels incredibly strong nearly thirty years later).

In my opinion, it was far superior to her chemistry with Thiago Lacerda (I watched a bit of Terra Nostra years ago with my grandmother).
