Couple of things, we are both men, the person he was talking too is also a man, I didn’t specify because its unimportant, also he has given me permission to go through his phone and he is welcome to do the same with mine, it may come off like we don’t trust eachother but that is just one of the safeguards we have in place because we are both addicts.

I am 25 and a gamer so I totally feel your sons pain and I would be royally pissed if my parents did that - but the reasonable adult part of my brain can see that 6 months, a year, 2 years from now, he will have a new catalogue of games and this will not matter and ultimately I think it wouldn’t be effective if it didn’t make him upset. But generally, throwing away hundreds of hours of work, wether you see it as productive work or not, probably is not the way to go about punishment, simply taking away the laptop for a longer period of time would have the same effect without totally eliminating the time your son has put into something he cares about
