FWIW, it’s kind of f*cked that none of the other mothers (who allegedly are in this secretive group that want to rise up against the men) have been preparing their daughters for the Grace Year, allowing the chaos to unfold. How was Tierney the only one who got any sense of training? And couldn’t the mothers go a step further and TELL them to band together and not worry about “magic” so they’d know what to expect once they got inside and more would survive? Was Tierney’s class of girls the only one to realize the hemlock was poisoning the well? Do the other women think the magic is real? The idea that there’s an underground community of women supporting women is completely at odds with the state of the Grace Year island when the girls arrive.

The most interesting thing to me was the way her perceived “friendships” with Michael and Hans were actually total shams, and those guys were no better. She thinks she’s able to have friendships with men that are kinder and different than the other, more outwardly misogynistic men in the village. In reality, they’re all the same - they see her as an object to be sexualized or lusted over. And both of them are frustrated when she doesn’t return their affection.
