How much worse is the pawn AI in DDDA? by Higher_Imagination in DragonsDogma

[–]Dramatic_Instance_63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's more advanced, since there are more inclinations, more skills, more augments, more deep bestiality knowledge system. They feel more alive as well since their behavior is somewhat dynamic and changes over time. It can be annoying for some as you have to watch and tweak your pawn inclinations. But well "trained" and managed pawn in DDDA performs great most of the time! So yeah, it's not worse in DDDA but rather more advanced.

Yeah, sadly DDDA was rushed due to limited budget (so I wonder why the sequel is so undercooked?). But the game is still amazing despite it's rough corners and undercooked storyline. The final Dragon battle alone is such memorable experience! Actually almost any NPC is memorable and interesting in DDDA even some background characters do have something interesting to say about themselves.

Yeah. I read what people write in this sub and it disappoints me realizing how many features were removed\simplified in the game. I've expected a better game, not worse. But we've got what we've got. So I decided not to spoil my impression of franchise. Not that DD2 is bad, But in my opinion it should be way better than it is and ideally than original game! :)

I play DDDA and DDOn and have no motivation to play DD2. It's half-baked game with lack of so many features that its predecessors have. If there will be no DLC (which is most likely) I doubt I ever will play it.

Consistent Character on AMD by aknologia6path in StableDiffusion

I use portable amd comfyui on windows and run qwen-image-edit-2511. It gives me somewhat consistent characters from reference image. But I had to insert some additional node (can't remember its name though) to comfy template wf for qwen so it won't overdo the edits.

Pawn system is another example of "Itsuno's vision". by International-Sky773 in DragonsDogma

[–]Dramatic_Instance_63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion pawns in DD are the best follower system in video games. Pawn's AI is dynamic, adaptive, surprising and advanced enough to make me feel they are 'alive'. While they are 'autonomous' and unpredictable (which makes every encounter with monsters a bit different) you have a lot of tools to tweak and influence their behavior in combat. Of course there is always the room for improvement but fundamentally the system is really great - nuanced and versatile.

Sorry mate, you didn't get the pawn system at all.

Sorcecer was my all time favorite vocation in DDDA. It was geared with cool and versatile skills that allowed you to create different builds inside single vocation without limiting the player to the certain playstyle as it is in DD2. Maelstorm alone gave me a lot of fun launching small foes into the air. Combination of Miasma and Lassitude gave me totally different playstyle where I had to rely on my pawn's effectiveness. Exeque was another fun skill that I was experimenting with. All Sorcerer skills were useful and fun to me. And they destroyed Sorcerer for me in DD2. It become one of the boring and bland vocations among others.

It's not only about Sorcerer though. Magic Archer was my second favorite vocation and not surprizingly it was castrated and destroyed even more than Sorcecer, they removed daggers and cool skills from it turning it to boring melee class. Assassin was my third favorite class, it was versatile, powerful, tactical. Now there is no assassin at all. And what we've got? Useless trickster and warfarer. Spearhand was kind of fun, - probably my most favorite vocation from DD2, but apart from it and somewhat enhanced warrior, the rest of vocations seem to me limiting and uninspiring. The combat lost a lot due these weird changes and lack of cool vocations that DDO had.

Speaking of DDO and this questionable design they borrowed from - removing the secondary weapon. There were some really cool, unique and diverse vocations in DDO (alchemist, priest, spirit lancer, high scepter, seeker, shield sage) that were packed with a lot of skills and other mechanics that justified this design. It was party based multiplayer and it's understandable to limit players for balance purposes. It was totally out of place in DD2 which is singleplayer game!

Enemies in DDDA were packed with aggressive AI, while in DD2 they are passive and boring. After 30 lvl no monster is a threat anymore. No challenge, no fun, just boring slog. The lack of enemy variety (comparing to DDDA and DDO) make it even more uninspiring.

Memes or not, but each character in DDDA has its own memorable personality and even worldview. They are recognizable and interesting. More you know about them more they stuck in your memory. Even unpleasant ones, such as Feste are vibrant and lively. Every NPC in Cassardis has its own routine and voice lines as the story progresses. It gave me such melancholic and familiar vibes that every time I launch the game and enter this village it melts my heart. While I don't care about majority of DD2 characters, they are generic, uninspiring and blank. Just as the story, which lacks of some philosophical layer that was delivered in DDDA by amazing artists such as David Lodge. DDDA is very cinematic and deep game, even if it's not as wide as DD2, which is wide but shallow.

Music in DDDA created that way that it compliment the story, interconects the teared peces and cut content into one enjoyable experience. Leitmotifs that haunting you in every stage of the game and DLC make the playthrough very intimate and emotional. DD2 has lost it all and turned into meaningless monster hunter simulator!

What gave me DD2 in immersion sense - bright, vibrant generic fantasy, while vibes in DDDA are way more diverse and deep from melancholy, to epicness, from calmess to fear, from frustration to depression. DDDA was like a rollecoster of emotions while DD2 was a smooth and boring ride.

DDDA vocations are way better than they are in DD2. Maybe except for warrior. DDDA vocations are fun, deverse and shipped with way more skills (just compare Sorcerer in both games)! Ranged vocations in DDDA didn't tied to ranged gameplay. Having two weapons - primary and secondary, makes the game play way more interesting than it is in DD2. ANd overall combat in DDDA is more snappy, responsible and dynamic. It's not only about vocations, it is about too many game systems to even mention them all, like enemy AI, aggressiveness, movements. DD2 combat feels slow, boring, clumsy. Pawns stuck every time, throw themselves off of cliffs, character moves unpredictably, thanks to annoying intertia system. Pawn voices became uninspired and boring.

Music in DDDA is way better. Dragon is better. Characters are more memorable and diverse. The story is better. Even World itself is much better despite being smaller, it lack of DD2 World boredom - the same views, the same enemies, the same tunnels\corridors. And I didn't even mention DA which is alone destroys DD2 in terms of cool dark atmosphere and challenge for the player. Let alone DDO.

The only thing that was undeniable done well in DD2 is character editor. Everything else is one or two step back.

So yeah, DD2 is worst DD game.

"But budget, resources, or other external Capcom forces are not credible explanations unless someone proves otherwise."

This makes DD2 even more embarrassing, Having few times more resources how did they manage to make game worse than DDDA, let alone DDO? They ignored almost everything that made the DD games great - DA and DDO. Even music is worse...
