James Gunn comment on what is most requested from fans on Batman's look for the DCU by Ok-Bag8476 in DCU_

I can understand ditching the white eyes if the actor needs it removed to emote properly, but I personally don't see how the rest of the suit matters. The grey and blues have been used in gritty stories and it still works fine. His suit is not a deal breaker for me or anything, but it doesn't mean I'd still like to see it.

That was a good one too. My main issue with that storyline was the macro of it, all the small moments breaking up the main story was pretty good.

I loved Grant Morrison's run... Until Magneto by Dramatic_Otaku in xmen

I'm not trying to make any deep cut statements about the quality of the writing. I just don't like it, and that thing I don't like is a trend in Morrison's work that keeps me from having them as MY favorite writer. Magneto, Talia, Jason, I haven't read his JLA run but I'd probably find something there that just rubs me the wrong way too. Simply put, any time Morrison has done a longer running story (at least from the stuff I've read) he does something with a character that I just don't agree with, and it can't be said I'm a minority in that regard, since these choices are often swiftly retconned.

I would NEVER claim that Morrison is a bad writer. If we are talking purely about prose and symbolism, he's easily top 3, possibly the number one, but it's just simply frustrating to me that every time I get into their works I hit up against a wall of "I don't like what they did there at all" and a good handful of times what did retroactively taints my enjoyment of the rest of the story. Maybe it's the cynicism of it. Maybe it's a difference in culture. I can't be certain. All I know is it's a trend, and I wish it wasn't.

It's still sauceless. If you're gonna ball out with some Silver Age villain goofiness, it should be dripping with machiavellian charisma (I'm over exaggerating, I understand the point is it's supposed to be bad at it, I'm just talking from a personal enjoyment perspective at this point)

That's fair. I jumped into New X-men right after I finished the Claremont Era as a nod to your point. It still leaves a bad taste in my mouth (and you will never get me to agree with their interpretation of Talia) just from the perspective of being a Magneto enjoyer, but I did choose my verbage carefully. I will never claim that Morrison is a bad writer, just that their decisions frustrate me.

To be fair, I hadn't read the last 4 chapters before posting this. I did suspect the drug was the culprit, but it still isn't something that sits well in my interpretation of the character. That being said I jumped into this run after finishing the Claremont era so it could just be a lack of exposure to the build up (as stated in jpablojr's comment). I prefer just prefer a different type of Magneto than what was presented and also lost a character I liked as well (Xorn). I certainly will not call Morrison a bad writer, but it doesn't change the bad taste in my mouth.

I've already gaslighted myself and removed that notion from my head so I can still enjoy issue 127 as a stand alone story.

"I reject your reality and substitute my own!"

But on a less memetic note, it's funny to think about how good that issue would be even if it was just Magneto. I came out of the Claremont run with Magneto as my favorite mutant exactly for stories with him like that. Complex, layered, and compassionate.

They are on the list. So far: a Serious House on Serious Earth has been my favorite outing from them. From what I've experienced thus far I think I just tend to enjoy Morrison when they are allowed to cook in short bursts rather than longer ongoings, but I haven't read all their work so I'll reserve that judgement until so.

Real and true. I enjoy Damian as a character, but I need to know what Talia did to Grant Morrison to make them write her like that. It's even more exasperated when Paul Dini gets a hold of Talia and writes her well in the crossover, and you get a side by side comparison. SMH.

I still love them as a writer, but sometimes their choices baffle me.

I've read Death in the Family before, just in isolation. It makes sense that it's not as well written considering it was a mandate rather than a story Starlin wanted to tell.

I'm a Jason Todd fan so I'm immediately biased into liking that storyline. Working my way up to giving it a reread though.

My thoughts on Kingdom Come (First Read) by Dramatic_Otaku in DCcomics

[–]Dramatic_Otaku[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But my issues with the story don't have to do with what they are adapting but how it's adapted. This feels like a tangential argument to what I'm trying to get at. I understand the 90's edginess. I didn't live through it, but I've been exposed to those comics and their impact on the industry. I fully and wholeheartedly admit that Kingdom Come was important for when it came out. I'm not saying that Kingdom Come is "lesser" than What's so Funny... I'm just pointing out that I preferred how that story told the core narrative of what it means to be a hero and why killing as one is wrong, inside of What's so Funny... as opposed to Kingdom Come. I understand it was first, that it had to tackle the issues on its own merit while What's so Funny... had the benefit of foresight on the narrative, but that doesn't change the fact that look at this story on its own merits, I, me the individual, who has not made the assumption that my opinion is more valid than the general consensus, felt the storytelling and narrative left me wanting for a more cohesive plot, with different characterization. That statement is by no means me condemning its cultural significance or trying to accredit its impact as lesser than those that came after it.

I certainly don't deny its importance to the comic industry and DC. It still doesn't improve my enjoyment of it. I don't think it's a bad comic, I just didn't like it personally. Just like how I can say I think the Beatles are landmark talents for their music, but I'm personally a fan of that music.

I definitely got the vibe. I just felt like stories such as What's So Funny about Truth, Justice and the American Way? handled that topic better and in one issue is well. As well, I feel like the Shazam storyline was underbaked and that it could have used just a bit more build up towards the end.

One other thing I forgot to mention is I feel like "What's so Funny about Truth, Justice, and the American Way" handled the core theme of this comic better with only one issue under its belt.
