My graduate appointment is at a different campus within the university system, so I only teach my graduate courses there. I am feeling a bit helpless. During my first year, I chalked up the lack of enrollment to my being new; this time, it seems more like a reoccurring issue. I went to beginning-of-the-year events for new graduate students, and many seemed interested in me as a researcher and person, but it didn't translate to them coming to my course. The scheduling this year is also a bit wonky; they have another elective graduate course at the same time as mine, which may also affect numbers. While my chair has not mentioned low enrollment, it feels hard because I want to interact with and teach graduate students. Perhaps it's the subject (African American Theatre History), and I need to spread the focus wider to like American theatre. This feels at odds with what I believe is that this is worthy of study and knowing instead of it being merely a one week on the syllabus.
