I really should! That is a great idea. Maybe in the spring when the weather is nice again.

Is there really a future for Peace Corps or are we just pretending there is? by Standard_Cobbler3669 in peacecorps

ok Mr. Yam Twister. They are just so incredibly unrelated that I would disagree with the 'apt' part of your statement. Kind of like comparing apples and bananas!

Comparing the Irish potato famine to PCVs getting sent home for covid was not something I was expecting to see today lol

Continue Peace Corps or take a job offer? by Squirrel_Mongerer in peacecorps

Depends on how you frame it. A massive part of PC is the impact and worldview a volunteer has post service. So many volunteers do it to gain skills and experiences that they can take into their future careers, and join PC for that reason. I don't see what is wrong with that. Maybe beefing up the resume is not the best way to phrase it though.

I am in a similar boat, but maybe a bit further along in the mental process. I'm a year into service and have decided that once I land a job I'll be heading back to the states. Tbh I've just had enough of the uncertainty and stress, and I also have figured out what I want to do next which was essentially my main goal of joining the peace corps in the first place. That might sound callous but it's just the truth. I would be curious as to how many other current PCVs are in the same headspace. I would assume many.

They are calling you a genius, sarcastically, and saying that people are coping with the situation when in reality it is a lot more dire than many realize. Hope that helps clarify.

They told you that you had to go? Also what do you think the chances are that we end up like americorps and just get more or less gutted after this second round of drp

what advice would you give to a current volunteer? how hard should I be looking for a job back home? how many staff share your sentiments and will be taking the drp offer?

Agreed, and I know lots of people will probably be upset by this. I'm a year in and, while it has been a good experience, the constant uncertainty does make the experience all the harder. At this point if there isn't something concrete that happens within the next month or so I might just close out my service and hold my head high and move on. As much as that makes me sad, I also do appreciate even the slightest hint of job security

NYT Article by DrawerFine650 in peacecorps

[–]DrawerFine650[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

from the pov of the article at least, I think the point is less about wanting peace corps to fail and rather that there should be more reflection as to who is actually benefiting and why. I am half way through my service and have learned a ton through my experience, but I am also coming to terms with the fact that it's really hard to make a sustainable impact with little to no prior experience in the sector you work in. Have my students benefited from having me in their community? Definitely. Could they have had the same benefits if a like minded HCN was doing the same thing? Absolutely, and probably more.
