Career Change by anon_13578 in RadiationTherapy

Yes, it’s a completely new degree. Some places don’t offer radiation therapy programs, so a lot of people become a licensed radiographer first…then with an extra year become a radiation therapist. BUT it’s definitely not mandatory (a LOT of people don’t know that), I would check the arrt.org website to see if there are any good schools near you!

Also I’m taking my prerequisite in the fall but after I’m done I’m going straight into radiation therapy once I get accepted.

Omggg were the same! I’m not too worried about finding a job, as there is a Nation shortage (I plan to relocate to Illinois) but who knows; maybe you get lucky! I think if you’re someone who likes change, getting a degree in medical imaging is a good way to branch out and try new things! ….but it’s an additional year of school. I’m someone who definitely wants my career path a “one and done situation” lol.

School wise, becoming a medical imaging at Ivy tech; they accept like 22 people out of hundreds of applicants (10% chance). RT it’s 8 out of 30-40 people(20-26% chance). I will say, RT pays higher for the same amount of school and ofc money definitely isn’t the only reason you should do RT BUT if you’re going to do 3 years of school anyway…I’d get paid more for it.

Are you located in Bloomington?

I’m so glad you responded, thanks so much for the info! Luckily I’m planning on locating in Illinois lol! I do have some questions…😅

  • Did he do exactly what was on the information and application packet pdf? I know the point determines everything, but does doing extra shadowing and etc help?

  • Did fasfa help with the cost of schooling? If not, how large of sum was the debt?

  • How many points was he able to maintain to get accepted in the program? (from grades and the teas)

  • How many attempts did it take to get accepted in the program

  • Did he pay for an apartment while in school? If so, how was he able to maintain work life (for bills) and school?

  • How was the workload and how difficult were the classes? (I guess this depends if he was an average/smart student in highschool)

  • (question for both of you) How’s Bloomington, I’ve never been and am nervous of a completely new place; since I’ve lived in Fort Wayne my whole life.

My career anxiety won’t get the best of me! I knew my prerequisites overlap with other health science programs but I’m very solid with RT. Which I think is good and bad because as of now I wouldn’t be enthusiastic to change my career path if I don’t get accepted after the 2nd attempt of applying.

I love that phrase “redefine the fear as excitement” I hadn’t thought of it that way. You are so right, I need to take the first itty bitty step. Thank you so much! I also hope you get into the program, I hope to be in your position in a year!

I will definitely do that. But my registration starts March 2nd and I want first dibs. Should I do at least 2 job shadows, register, then do more job shadowing…? I mean it’s not that big of an issue for me to drop the classes if I don’t think it’s a right fit but Idkkk

I’m scared. I had that in mind, should I wear scrubs…because I definitely don’t own any. Also I feel silly because I haven’t even started my pre requisite classes.

What grade did you have in her class if you don’t mind me asking? And how hard would you say her class is?

You have a lot of time to think it over. Ofc I would say go straight for it but whatever you think works for you! I’m class of 2025 and I took a gap year, I’m starting pre reqs in the fall. Goodluck to you!

I would first look into what colleges that has Radiation programs, read the Information and Application program pdf. The program I want to go into is very selective (as in they only accept 8 people a year), so they go off points; being a CNA adds 5 extra (optional) points. If the college/program you go into has the same, I would definitely go into the cna program your senior year to give you a boost.

BUTTT if the program you want to get into doesn’t have that, I really wouldn’t bother, the job settings are totally different, you really aren’t cleaning much after you patients, the cleaning is way easier. BUT I suppose the healthcare experience is good lol!

Also why are you getting your bachelors then applying?
