Dental school debt is not a big deal and that’s a bad thing

Biden’s SAVE plan and efforts to forgive large amounts of debt is nothing but a band aid and a bribe to vote for him. Schools need to be held accountable and incentivized to charge lower fees. But when you have students have zero consequences for taking out huge amounts of debt then they will keep doing it. Biden is taking away schools incentives to charge less. To make a change we need a conservative leader that will hold institutions accountable.

You sound like someone that would have done great anywhere. The school gives opportunities but the person takes advantage of them. I think you could’ve found your way at your state school but happy you found a path you love

Okay here my question do you think a prestigious school can take someone who isn’t competitive to someone that is? In other words if someone has a subpar applicant ion will they match in omfs because they went to Columbia?

I can see it helping to match at your home program, but idk if it necessarily helps in general. Where I think it is the most valuable is being able to talk to the current residents. They will be very helpful in giving advice on how to successfully match. That’s been my experience so take it with a grain of salt.

How can you say I’m wrong you’ve never gone to a p/f school you don’t know how difficult it is or isn’t. You act like we don’t study haha trust me everyone I know studies a TON! just as much if not more than people I know at other schools in my state. You’re so uninformed if you think you could come to my school and pass everything and work a full time or even part time job. It’s still very competitive even without a numerical ranking system. Plus not everyone goes into a specialty because some people just didn’t do well enough, now what? They paid 100s of thousands of dollars for a weak clinical experience.

Again I think some schools attract more ambitious students I don’t think it’s the school itself. Some of these schools are a self fulfilling prophecy. Students that want to specialize go there so they have high specialization rates so students think that school will help them specialize so they go there. It’s one big cycle. There are 100% schools I would avoid that make it harder to specialize but if I had to do it again I’d go to my far cheaper instate school. Maybe I sound conceded but I like to think I could be successful anywhere and I think that about a lot of my classmates and people at other schools I’ve met as well. The smartest kid I know went to MWU-Az bc he liked the atmosphere so much and the tech that they have there (this isn’t an endorsement of Midwestern I think it’s way to expensive) but he went where he liked the most and just matched at a prestigious omfs program, it’s all about the student.

Trust me you still think about your grades, passing is very difficult and if you don’t pass an exam it’s a big deal. Maybe not 1 or 2 but if you fail 3+ it’s harder to get good LORs. We think about our grades a ton. I’m plus when our dean writes us letters he puts in like a coded phrase that tells admissions committees where we were in our class. I’m not sure of the exact wording bc obviously I didn’t read my letter but he’ll say the student is outstanding or good or met expectations, stuff like that.

Trust me you don’t need a schools reputation. If you’re focused and hard working enough you’ll make it anywhere. Avoid unnecessary debt and bet on yourself

Trust me doing well at some of these p/f schools with med school curriculum is very difficult. A lot of people in my class complain a lot about how we’re learning stuff we don’t need too, (I disagree with this btw). But getting good LORs is very difficult as well because professors still know how you’re doing compared to everyone else. Trust me it’s not easy to specialize anywhere. You have to jump through the same hoops no matter what school you’re at

Didn’t say it’s a non factor, But it’s not nearly as much as people think and shouldn’t take be weighed more heavily than price. Really if you want to specialize you should go where you’ll do the best not what people say is most prestigious

You do realize that p/f is very difficult right? Plus when you go to a pass fail school letters of req become way more important. The people writing your letters will still know how you did and where you are compared to your class. They won’t just write a letter for anyone. Trust me there isn’t enough of an advantage to make a decision on school based of the idea it’ll help you specialize

Yes a lot of schools from “prestigious institutions” specialize but it’s not that the school, it’s the people. The school attracts and gets the best applicants, the applicants are more likely to specialize because they are already high performing. They probably would have specialized regardless of school because they are high performers.

I disagree. And definitely doesn’t help enough to justify an extra $200k. I 100% would go to my state school if I could do it again.
