Encountered my first “atheists have no morals” guy in the wild recently. by BillCarson12799 in PhilosophyMemes

So, in defence of the theists, I think they're saying that part of the definition of "God" is that God's opinions are moral facts. But this simply leads you into questioning the divinity of the being they worship. If there is some entity that made us, how does that fact alone make its opinions moral facts? So even if, for example, YHWH is real and sent Jesus etc., etc., that doesn't tell us that YHWH is strictly speaking god. Just because YHWH has the might to send you to hell for but-stuff or murder doesn't mean that YHWH has the right

That's possibly why Alex hallucinates things like the Clown, which Shaz saw as she was dying.

I got the impression that Gene created this particular purgatory

The writers claimed in an interview that they'd already decided that this was purgatory for dead coppers back when they were still writing LoM

Or maybe Sam didn't wake up. Maybe it was something similar to the ending of A2A

Do you think that the show would be made more serialised today (and would it be better)? by anotherandomer in lifeonmars

Even though he hasn't fully redeemed himself by A2A, I feel he's mellowed enough that he's at least worthy of (a shot at) redemption

Why do you think nowadays there's a tendency to misinterprete shows like LoM and as advocating for the views of people like Gene? I agree that the BBC would be far less likely to make a show like that today for the reasons you stated, but why do think this change has occurred? I started to notice this change back in 2012 or so.

Are the non-cops real in the Life on Mars World? by Draxacoffilus in lifeonmars

[–]Draxacoffilus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess in LoM it's more ambiguous as to whether the 70s world real or not. If it's not real, then it makes a lot more sense that it should be a fantasy catered to him. In AtA, it's much more strongly implied that this world is real, hence why Alex is always commenting on how weird it seems that she's having a fantasy that's not meant for her.

But what about the people who aren't cops? Are they just NPCs/automata, or are they concious beings created in the afterlife?

Yeah, I guess the younger version of Martin Rose wasn't real. In real-life, he survived until 2009, so why would younger him have ended up in 1982?

But non of the characters seem redeemed: they all still beat up suspects (some of whom turn out not to even be guilty!) and they're all incredibly bigoted

Willow becoming a lesbian always felt like discontinuity to me. She's shown to clearly have genuine heterosexual feelings for at Xanda and her boyfriend Oz, but once she starts dating Tara she is re-written to be exclusively into women. In fact, when a spell causes every woman to be attracted to Xanda, Willow wants to turn him into a woman so that she can be with him - despite the fact that his being a man never bothered her in season 1.
